If I understand correctly, you waited until Rebit made a restore point, and then you had Rebit create another restore point which took five and a half hours. Since this is abnormal behavior, it would behoove you to contact Rebit Support directly by email: support@rebit.com
We would need to see your gatherer logs, ideally one right after a backup and then another after the additional backup that takes 5 hours. This way we can compare the two and find out why it is taking such a long time.

Thank you.

Without knowing how much data has changed how can you, or I, calculate the data throughput?
I made this experiment:

I disconnected the computer from the Internet then:
1. I made a full Rebit backup (11.96 hours)
2. I made another full Rebit backup (5.46 hours)

From this I deduce that every time I make a backup there is a 5.5 hour overhead.
You say that when making a full abckup Rebit only copies data that has changed, so that's 5.5 hours to backup no data.
I do realise that Rebit has a lot of work to do to determine what data, if any, has changed and I assume this is what is going on, is this correct?
On my computer, Rebit is creating 104Gb of Completed Records and a syncSnapshot size of 1.1Gb for a hard drive that has 163Gb of data on it (presumably less what you call Windows backup files).

Am I missing something?

Thanks - update to above questions:

1. Yes, it resumed in 48 hours - strange that it said it would resume in 1 (!) day instead of 2.

2. Since Rebit knows that it is paused for 2 days, I really wish it would not ping the drive until then (why would it need to?). I would be very happy indeed for the Rebit tray icon to become orange until then. Can this please be considered?

When you pause it for 2 days it should stay paused and resume after 48 hours. If this is not the case then there may be a problem. Please keep us updated. The flashing light is the software pinging the drive to check its status; this is necessary for if the drive is physically disconnected the Rebit tray icon will become orange. I hope it is not too much of a nuisance for you.

I believe your initial findings to be correct, as Rebit backs up everything that has changed on your system with the exception of Windows backup files (since that is redundant data).

That is correct, Rebit will create a full backup of your entire system initially. It will then create subsequent recovery points capturing only the files that have been changed. Depending on what you do on your system and the size of the files being modified, Rebit can sometimes take much more than a few minutes to do its daily backup. I would suggest that you keep an eye on it, and if it is always taking such a long time to backup, you can always have it do the backups in the evening when you are not using your computer or once a week even.

I paused Rebit5 and set it to resume in 2 days.
When I look at the Status bar it says backups will resume in 1 day. I have 2 questions:

1. Will backup resume in 48 hours (and not before) when I set it for 2 days?

2. Why does the backup drive keep flashing once or twice a second? Task Manager shows the Rebit-5-Svc.exe consumes 1% or sometimes 2% of the CPU each time the drive flashes. I wonder what it can be doing since backup is paused.

Thanks, dan

I now believe the throughput figures I quoted above may be misleading because I don't suppose that Rebit5 backs up the whole of the VSS drive copy does it?
What exactly is backed up in a Recovery Point (or it may be easier to say what is not backed up)?

I have installed Rebit and it took about 8 hours to do a complete backup to the attached external harddrive..

I did the same the following day and was surprised it took hours to carry out a complete backup a second time.

I was of the opinion that once Rebit had carried out a backup the first time, from then on it would be a matter of minutes to do a second backup.

I dont want to sit with an external harddrive connected to my laptop everytime I use it, for hours on end.

When Rebit 3 had a Safely Disconnect option it was more of a shortcut to the windows feature. Rebit 5 does not have one. Some Windows XP users will find that selecting the actual hard drive from the drives list instead of the Generic Volume and then clicking on disconnect will work better.

On some systems the safely disconnect feature is not working correctly, or it could be the case that a program like an antivirus scanner are holding the drive tied up with constant scans and hence preventing it from being disconnected.
There are programs out there that will tell you which program is preventing a drive from disconnecting.

Open the log file and search for "completed create recovery point".
The time for the operation is then given in seconds.
My C: drive has 149Gb used and it took 27793 seconds (8.22 hours), that's 18 Gb/hour (to a USB 3.0 drive).
I do not leave equipment powered on over night.

"Safely disconnect" used to be an option with Rebit 3 but it never worked for me. I don't know where a "Safely Disconnect" button exists within Rebit 5. Does it? Clicking on the regular "Safely Remove Hardware" icon doesn't work either. I get the message "The device 'Generic volume' can't be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later." Later is never late enough, because I never get a different message.
I appreciate your feedback nevertheless.

The log files are not really intended for users, they are more for Rebit personnel if the need arises to troubleshoot your system. The backup speed varies depending on the system, but we estimate a rate of about 10GB/hr. It is usually best to start a backup in the evening and let it run overnight.

I would like to be able to turn off Rebit completely without having to shut down my laptop for any number of reasons, including:
1. Moving my laptop to different locations within our building.

@hsmyser - there is no software patch as the situation you describe should already work. There is plenty of space on your K drive, and if both C and J are checked, it should backup your J drive. If your system has been online for a sufficiently long enough time for a backup and J remains not backed up, please contact support directly as they might want to see your log files in order to determine the exact cause of this issue.

Both C and J are checked for backup with Rebit 3.0, which is installed on drive K, which is a separate 2 TB USB 2.0 drive that is plugged into a system USB port, directly, not a USB extension port.

Rebit has backed up the C drive, which is confirmed when I mouse over any C file, as a window correctly appears that provides data about the Rebit backup.

However, mousing over any J file confirms that Rebit has not backed it up, as there is no Rebit data that appears.

Do you have a software patch or something that fixes this?

Rebit 5 provides live continuous backup, so it is altogether possible that it will stay active. If this is bothering you, you can always use the Pause feature or keep the drive disconnected until you want it to make a new recovery point.

We have not aware of any incompatibilities of Rebit working side by side with other backup programs. While I cannot recommend our competitors products, there are many options out there, and I am sure they have trial ware that you can test.

Thank you for your suggestion jimgage, I have submitted your post regarding the way Rebit views the soft and hard cap to the development team. I am sorry you are having difficulties as a result of this.

Thank you Arjan, I have removed the spam. To answer your question, Rebit 5 operates just as I explained above: backing up the .pst and .ost files only once a day.

Hello, I am running Rebit 5 with W7 Ultimate. Now I need a solution that allows me to make also full System Backups.... Acronis might not be a solution, also I do not like W7 Backup. What's your recommondation? And how to proceed with Rebit 5 while a full Backup (means a second Backup) is running in parallel?

Regards
