Automatic Updates in Windows XP keep you up to date automatically. Windows XP checks the Windows Update Web site for the latest updates when you are on the Internet, determines which updates apply to your computer, and downloads them in the background while you keep working.

I was secretly hoping that the software update would magically fix the iPhone 4's antenna design problem, because I really wanted to buy what otherwise is an great gadget. Unfortunately, the cosmetic change to the bar display—which promises to show the actual signal strength—will not fix the transmission/reception problem that countless iPhone 4 users are experiencing.

I am attempting to do a system restore. The screen has been at the "Preparing drive PhysicalDrive0" point for 8 hours now. I let it go for 12 hours last night and decided that there was something amiss, put in a new hard drive and restarted the process. Both the light on my Rebit drive and the desktop drive are on. The desktop drive activity light is flickering continuously. How long can the process take? If 8 hours is too long why isn't the recovery taking place? Suggestions? I am running XP Pro. Don't know the Rebit version since the system is down. I am using my laptop for email.

I use my laptop as if it were a desktop. It has a Vista 32 bit operating system. As a ,docking station, I use a ,7 port USB adapter. Can I simply unplug the 7 port adapter from my PC or must I first uninstall drive. Can I damage data or drive if I do not uninstall drive before disconnecting from my laptop.

When I plug in my backup drive will it automatically begin a new system backup up again?

If you have a lock icon next to the drive, there are two ways to resolve this issue. The easiest is to connect your external drive to another computer and boot into Windows. Then, in the system tray, do a "Safely Disconnect" on the USB drive. Once it is disconnected, plug it into the system you are trying to restore and the lock will be removed.

The other option is to plug it into another computer and run a check disk on the external drive. Once it is complete, the lock will be removed.

Hi,

I had a system malfunction, so I downloaded the latest recovery boot CD image from Support, created the rebit boot CD and booted from it. When it gets to the part where it shows my external USB HD to restore from, I cannot select it. It has a red Lock icon next to it. I believe it is because I have set a rebit password for this backup archive. However, I am not prompted to enter the password to unlock it. Therefore, I cannot restore my backup data! Please advise!

Thanks!

There is no way to install programs onto a computer from the Rebit in this way. The only way programs are recovered is through the complete Bare Metal Restoration process. You also cannot run files from the Rebit, so they must first be moved onto your computer.

While Rebit will not reinstall software, in some cases you can still drag-and-drop the directory onto your computer and run the program from this folder.

I bought Rebit SaveMe to use the backup of my old desktop (XP) programs on my new Windows 7 laptop. However, that does not work. Has the backup failed or is it simply impossible to do this? I do not want to copy the first computer's programs, I just want to be able to use them.

Hello,

Thank you for your reply. I left my computer on all night, and the lack of space message was gone this morning.

My take on this is that, the rebit service is built to be running in the background and not take over the CPU when the machine is in use. It will take hold of the processor to do his heavy NeverFull feature only when there is no activity on the machine.

Enough CPU to run the backup securely, but not quite enough to maintain his heavy NeverFull feature. Thats my take, might not be exact however.

Now I do have backup, BUT, on my rebit drive, I see TWO D drives with the same data in it. Is this a result of a corrupted index, in which case I am screwed and have to reformat everything?

To ensure this does not happen again, could a Purge feature be added to rebit, a feature where the user could say, please cleanup my drive, and remove everything older than X date. People are not stupid, those who want to Purge their drive, would know what they are doing....

Thank you

Please make sure that the C: drive is NTFS and not FAT32. If it is FAT32 you will need to convert it to an NTFS in order for Rebit to be installed. Step by step instructions can be found either through a search engine or here:

Jeff,

Thank you for your feedback, I assure you it does not fall on deaf ears. In most cases it does not take anywhere close to 48 hours, the reason we give this time frame is to allow even the slowest computer ample time for our software to resolve this issue if it is related to the Neverfull technology. There is a related cause that produces the same message; if the indexes on the external drive have been corrupted, our software will not be able to delete any files and will be permanently stuck. We have studied many of these cases, and believe that we have found a solution to prevent this from occurring in the future. Our latest software can prevent this indexing corruption from taking place, alas it cannot repair it once it has already happened. Hence, the best solution is to perform a full reset of the drive with the latest software, instructions for this can be found here.
Since these instructions involve completely wiping the drive and consequently deleting all of your backups, we ask customers to wait 48 hours in the event that corrupt indexes are not the culprit.

That being said, the process upon receiving the "Your backup has been suspended owing to the lack of space" is still to wait 48 hours to allow the Neverfull technology the opportunity to delete older files to make room for new ones. If 48 hours go by and the message persists, then a reset to the latest software is the best method to fix and prevent this indexing corruption in the future.

You do not need to unzip/extract the downloaded file. It may appear like a WinZip or similar type of file, but it is an ISO file. Mount the downloaded files using Nero or a similar burning program and burn the image. With Nero, you have the option of right-clicking on the downloaded file and selecting Open with Nero. This will get you all the way through the process automatically so that all you have to do is insert a blank CDR/DVDR and click Burn.

I too got the same message. I am running version SaveMe Express 3.0.1026.8778 on Windows 7 64bits. The documentation (help files) clearly states : "Rebit SaveMe uses "Neverfull" technology to continuously make room for new and revised files. Once the Rebit SaveMe is full, "Neverfull" deletes the oldest redundant backups and older deleted files as necessary to make room for new data. However, be assured that everything currently on your computer is completely backed up at all times".

Its been more than 48 hours since I originally first got the message, and I still cannot enjoy my continuous backup. The words "continuously" and "backed up at all times" should be removed from the documentation since they are a false claim. If we have to wait any amount of time for the NeverFull backup to kick in, please revise the documentation and advise your user base.

Now, what can I do to start having a backup again ?

You are correct, the version you site does have the never-full technology that will delete older data. However, sometimes it takes up to 48 hours for the old data to be deleted and for a new recovery point to be created. If this is not resolved on your system in this time frame on its own, please contact Rebit Technical Support for further troubleshooting.

How to make a Rebit Recovery Flash Drive

Due to the fact that more and more computers do not have optical drives these days, it is sometimes necessary to use a flash drive to boot into Rebit's full system restoration function instead of a CD.

In order to do this, users must first download UNetbootin, a program that allows the creation of bootable USB drives:

UNetbootin-- Latest Windows Software

Additional information about UNetbootin can be found here

Once UNetbootin is downloaded, run it. You will see a Window that looks like this:

IMAGE 1

Click the bubble next to "Diskimage." Leave the default "ISO" option and download the following file:

Rebit Recovery ISO

Once it is downloaded, click on the [...] in the Diskimage field and find the file that you just downloaded. Once it is selected, click OK. You should now have UNetbootin look like this:

IMAGE 2

At the bottom of the UNetbootin window, select "USB Drive" under Type and then the select the correct drive letter in the Drive menu. It may be necessary to select "Show All Drives" if your flash drive does not appear.

Once you have everything selected, click OK.

Note:When the process completes it will ask if you want to reboot – select EXIT.

Now, open the flash drive in your Computer/My Computer window. You will see the following files:

Rename syslinux.cfg to 1syslinux.cfg

Copy menu.c32 from the boot folder on the flash drive into the root of the USB drive

Copy USB:\boot\isolinux\isolinux.cfg into the root of the USB drive

In the root of the drive rename menu.c32 to vesamenu.c32

In the root of the drive rename isolilnug.cfg to syslinux.cfg

Done. Boot from the flash drive to verify.

I have a rebit that was used on an old XP computer.

I now have a new Windows 7 computer and I would like to start backing up this new computer.

I DO NOT need to bring any files over from rebit, I just need to start using it as if it were brand new on the new computer.

Do I simply reset rebit using the single license reset instructions or is there something else I need to do.

Again, I do NOT need any data off of Rebit, I just need it to start backing up the new computer, which is a 64 bit machine, Windows 7.

Thanks.

Once I've gotten the "snapshot creation done" will Rebit then go in and do the initial cataloging again to get all the system files, etc. Will I now be able to restore the entire hard drive and all the Windows components?

Thanks!

If you cannot update through the options in your Rebit menu, then the update server is most likely turned off. This happens during certain times due to maintenance or if there is an increased number of traffic.

I have not seen this happen before. The only sure way to find out is to uninstall Rebit and see if the drive will begin working correctly. If it does, then this would be something you should call our technical support with. If not, then there might be a hardware issue with the drive.

If you bought the Multi-PC software and want to have a seperate external drive for each system, here is the process.

Connect the drive you want Rebit to backup your computer onto to the computer in question. Make sure that the drive is formatter and in NTFS. Insert the Rebit CD into the computer, and follow the installation instructions on your screen. Once it is installed, it will backup the computer. Do this on each external drive and on each computer.

The most likely reason for this is that the drive you are trying to backup is not formatted in NTFS. To find out, right-click Computer/My Computer and select Manage. From there, open up Disk Management in the options on the left. This will show you all the disks in the system. If it is indeed not NTFS, you can convert it to NTFS according to Microsoft's instructions found by through a search engine.

The reason the system drive and sometimes other drives are grayed out, is because they cannot be unselected. The system drive, for example, cannot be unselected because no matter what it will be backed up. Consequently, any partitions that are located on the physical hard drive along with the system partition cannot be unselected.

eSATA and Firewire work with our software. The reason they are not "officially" supported by our company, is because there are complications in certain cases. For example, eSATA connections tend to backup at a much faster rate, but there are cases where they slow down a client's computer during backup. This is due to the nature of eSATA taking up more resources than a USB drive would. As you can see, we cannot claim that our software "works in the background and does not slow down your system" and support eSATA...

What I would recommend is trying the software with your setup, whether it is eSATA of Firewire. Just make sure you have the latest software version. The latest versions can always be found here:
