When Rebit 3 had a Safely Disconnect option it was more of a shortcut to the windows feature. Rebit 5 does not have one. Some Windows XP users will find that selecting the actual hard drive from the drives list instead of the Generic Volume and then clicking on disconnect will work better.

On some systems the safely disconnect feature is not working correctly, or it could be the case that a program like an antivirus scanner are holding the drive tied up with constant scans and hence preventing it from being disconnected.
There are programs out there that will tell you which program is preventing a drive from disconnecting.

"Safely disconnect" used to be an option with Rebit 3 but it never worked for me. I don't know where a "Safely Disconnect" button exists within Rebit 5. Does it? Clicking on the regular "Safely Remove Hardware" icon doesn't work either. I get the message "The device 'Generic volume' can't be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later." Later is never late enough, because I never get a different message.
I appreciate your feedback nevertheless.

I don't think the Pause option is a true on-off switch.
I would like to be able to turn off Rebit completely without having to shut down my laptop for any number of reasons, including:
1. Moving my laptop to different locations within our building.
2. To facilitate hibernation when I take the laptop home at night. My laptop takes at least 3 minutes to boot up from a shut down and only a few seconds from hibernation mode.

Honestly one should not worry about such things since Rebit will automatically delete older files to make room for new ones when it is reaching capacity. If you do want to start over with the backups, the easiest way is to run a Quick Format on the backup drive and have it re-backup everything.

Let's say I want to clean up the backup. Seems like the easist thing to do would be to cleam up the computer itself, then delete the current backup and start again. Any better suggestions? For instance, I am sure there are a dozen old quicken datasets, many old files no longer needed, etc. I am concerned about my backup being so bloated it would be cumbersome to restore if I needed to do so. Any thoughts?

I think it was the SaveMe version of Rebit which made it possible to store non-Rebit data on the same hard drive. But this utility is virtually unusable because there's no way to turn Rebit off so that it won't start up upon connection. The last thing I want is for Rebit to be operating when I'm trying to store or retrieve non-Rebit data from the hard drive. Does Rebit 5 address this obvious requirement?

Which Brand Would You Choose?
Have you heard about the origin of the brand name Dior? In French, Dior is the combination of God and Gold, those Dior handbags are the representative of gorgeous and elegance. In modern society, Dior has become the pronoun of fashion. No wonder so many girls want to own one of them. Even the students who do not have any financial incomes are fascinated for the Jimmy Choo handbags they are trying many methods to get a large amount of money to buy them. That would certainly add some burden to their family. However, that is the inevitable point for top luxury handbags. If you would like to own something, first you should pay something. Some people might be attracted by the Double F logo and the unique design of Fendi handbags, so they are always gossiping those products. In many movies, we could see the scenes that in the campus, if a girl wearing the top brand handbags or clothes, many other girls would surround her and compliment her highly taste. It is only right and proper that owning the Lancel handbags, Loewe handbags, Bally handbags, Bottega Veneta handbags or thomas wylde handbags would bring endless admirers surrounding you and envy you a lot. They might praise the soft touch, nice looking or just the brands. And then such events would make you feel so pround and enjoy your life.

After your classmates or friends knowing you are wearing the famous branded handbag, there is large possibility for them to follow your action. Therefore, maybe they would not buy the same brand items with yours. Some people want something different from others, if they are wearing the same clothes, handbags or shoes at the same time, both of them would not be happy. Ha-ha, that's the nature of girls. So they might switch to buy the Yves Saint Laurent handbags, Marc Jacobs handbags, valentino handbags, Alexander Wang Handbags or 3.1 Phillip Lim Handbags. For these extremely expensive items, most people are waiting for the price cutting in vast scale. This happen when the season changes to another. In that time the fashion trend would change greatly. Then the most trendy things might become out of date, and the most valuable things might be very inexpensive. That's the regular rule in the market.

Users have the option to keep their backup drive disconnected until the plan to make a backup. We will most likely not be implementing this feature, since our software has always been intended to be simple and work automatically. The more we tweak it to allow for this kind of control, the further we move away from this simplicity and from the majority of our clients.

I am not running a critical system, which is the type of system Rebit is particularly built for in my opinion or at least Rebit's primary audience.

I would like a feature where, when enabled, Rebit detects CPU usage and, if a network drive, network usage before running a backup. If I am running a CPU intensive process or sending a lot of data through the network, it is likely that I need the CPU and network space Rebit is taking by running live backups. Though I can hit pause, often in a video game or while watching a movie online I will forget to do this. Rebit should be smart enough, like my antivirus software that doesn't run its full system scans when I'm using the machine, to go into a low power mode when the system is being used intensively.

Though I like it that Rebit backs up absolutely everything, I dislike it that the Rebit backup drive is always running. I would like the options to specify "Backup every 30 minutes" or "Backup every hour". I understand part of Rebit's security is regularly backing up everything on the system, but backing up everything every second is a waste of energy. As an energy conscious person, I turn off my Rebit drive most of the time because it is always running when its on.

Having a backup is critical, but I'm the low-end user Rebit was built for - no critical systems. Thus, an hourly backup is plenty.

Moreover, I backup to two locations. One location is a network drive. Particularly because of it's network location, the occasional backup over the regular backup would reduce load on my network.

Hey,

Since we can have multiple backup of the same PC on different media, say a portable USB drive and a NAS (network drive), if both drives are accessible by rebit all the time, its great, both drives will have the same information backuped.

But say I carry around with me my USB drive to work, and run rebit locally there during the day, and then, when I go home and connect my laptop on my network, rebit starts backuping to the network drive.

I have no way of knowing if my USB and my NAS drive both have all the version of all the files I worked on during the day.

For that reason, I would like to see in the rebit browse explorer, a computer icon for each Rebit backup location, eg:

MyComputer on Local Backup Drive

MyComputer on Network \\computer\share

Does that make any sense ?

@beginner, I agree very much. I guess the feature request is twofold:

Being able to exclude files and folders from being written to the backup. (Privacy; security; copyright; large files such as VM images.)

Being able to remove the above from a backup if already backed up earlier.

As for the first: note that Apple's Time Machine also allows third party software to exclude itself from being backed up. For example: VM software often allows a user to exclude VM images, and then sets the
com.apple.metadata:com_apple_backup_excludeItem
"extended attribute" on the files that need to be skipped. It might be nice if Windows software can exclude itself from being backed up by well known backup software too.

(Sorry for posting kind of the same thing twice earlier; I didn't see I already commented on this. That was stupid...!)

Yes, that's interesting, but let's suppose I know which files could be problematic and I delete them regularly or when the programs are closed - the files are still backed up ...

Like, for example, the cross-browser traces Flash stores on your computer, even when using some private browsing mode.

Since version 10.1, Flash might be clearing that history in the 4 major browsers, but I never tested that. Adobe is still improving other privacy issues, but the fact that they only started doing so after complaints maks me think that soon other things will be abused for the same thing. Like HTML5 Local Storage, which cannot even be cleared from Safari!
