My computer hard drive started failing during a Rebit update. I replaced the hard drive and can get through all the Rebit recovery screens. I have picked the latest and earliest restore point and when I click restore, Rebit says it's complete in a second. I can browse the Rebit drive on another computer and my data seems intact but it will not restore. Any ideas?

Sorry about that everettf, your issue is truly unique as I have not heard of any other similar issues to date. Rest assured, this has been submitted to the developers so that they can insure compatibility in a future patch/release.

Regarding your question, there is a way to do this in Ubuntu, but alas I am not familiar with the process myself. I know that some senior Support Engineers can do this. Your best bet might be to contact support by phone once more and discuss this with them. Forgive me for the runaround, I truly wish that you did not experience this incompatibility in the first place.

The answer to above is no. Told verbally by Rebit tech support that my near state of the art hardware is incompatible with their restore software. Obviously, this kind of compatibility check should have been performed when the software was installed, but oh well.

One more question... The restore software runs on Ubuntu. I can boot Ubuntu directly on my hardware, can I run the Rebit restore program from Unbuntu?

The same recovery disk will work on all Windows systems. Keep in mind that there is an option to create a small bootable partition automatically on the USB drive automatically through Rebit 5. That way you can boot into recovery mode on any system by setting it to boot off of the USB external drive. This is much handier in my opinion than a CD.

We have either XP machines or Windows 7 machines.
Will the same recovery disk work for both operating systems?
Or, do I have to make a separate recovery disk for each operating system?

"If you choose to restore to a drive larger than the original drive, keep in mind:
.All NTFS sections with a drive letter assigned are increased proportionally to the size they were on the original drive.[etc.]"
Should the word "sections" be "sectors"?
If, for example, I have a 320GB drive that uses 4K sectors, will recovering the Rebit backup of the 320GB drive drive to a 640GB drive result in 8K sectors on the new larger drive?

I can't help but am curious: did you need to enter your password, to be able to delete it? (And maybe try setting a simple password without uppercase or any special characters, to ensure any keyboard layout will work? Maybe you cannot really blank the password, though that would be a bug too of course.)

The Rebit 5 backup on my USB HDD is pasword protected.

Now today I tried to make a full system recovery to an earlier date from my Rebit backup using the Rebit 5 Recovering CD

After finding the disk it asks for the pasword, but great is my supprise that the pasword is not accepted. I am 200% sure that I used the right pasword and tried it several times. With Caps on/of and NumLK on/of but to no avail...

As a workaround I went back starting up Windows 7 normally and then in the Rebit 5 Dashboard settings I deleted the pasword. So no pasword proctection is there anymore. And I could open the Rebit backup folders and scroll in them with no pasword needed.

Then again I shut down Win7 and started the Rebit5 Recovery CD.
But then again and again a pasword is asked even when there is no pasword protection!

So what is the problem here and what to do about it. Needless to say that a backup system is completely useless when access is denied even without pasword protection!

Thanks,

I have just about had it with Rebit5! I can go through all the menus to do a complete restore up to the point where it saids it is restoring files but the progress indicator stays at 0% and after about 3 or 4 minutes the program just stops running and the computer is frozen. I then have to do a hard reboot. Nothing appears to be removed from my drive and nothing is restored. I also checked the hard drives for any errors and it appears to be ok. I can view the backup and restore points with no problem. I really need to do a complete restore as Windows XP Pro has some serious issues and I don't want to start from scratch and lose a lot of my programs and data.

No, Rebit 5 (and 3) restores your computer to exactly as it was at the date and time of the recovery point. Everything.

Note that you need to boot from the recovery media in order to perform this operation. Recovery will normally take several hours to complete.

Arjan -- Thank you for your suggestions. I re-installed Rebit on the newly configured hard drive after installing Windows 7. Browsing the Rebit backup drive indicated that there were two 'histories': one for the failed drive (call it 'drive old') and a second for the new drive. I was able to restore by copying folders from the old history file and pasting onto the new drive. Works like a charm. My wife is extremely grateful. Again, thanks.

I've not used Rebit for a restore yet. But my understanding is that double-clicking the "Start" program on the backup disk will start Rebit on a computer that does not even need Rebit installed.

See "Browsing Backups on a Computer without Rebit 5 Installed" on page 32 in the manual, which currently states:

Installing the Backup Browser

On the computer that does not have Rebit installed, plug in the USB backup drive containing the Rebit 5 backups.

Using Windows Explorer, open and view the files stored on the Rebit 5 drive.

Double-click
Start.exe
.

You will be asked if you want to Browse backups or Install software.

Browse backups - This option installs only the backup browser used to view Rebit 5 backups.

Install software - This option installs the full version of Rebit software, including the backup browser.

I noticed signs of imminent failure on a hard drive on my wife's computer. I purchased the Rebit 5 software/disk combination and got a single backup before the laptop disk failed completely. HP sent a new drive (now installed), new OS (Win 7 64 bit) and original drivers. I would like to retrieve her files from the rebit drive (hopefully without having to restore OS). Can this be done? Do I have to make a restore drive?

The lock indicates that the drive was not properly dismounted from a Windows system.

To correct this, take the drive to a Windows system right click on the drive, and select "Properties". On the "Tools" tab, select "Check now...". Click on "Start" and wait for the process to complete. It can take minutes or hours depending on the severity of the issue. Now turn off the Windows computer and disconnect the drive. You may have to repeat this process if the Rebit disk is failing.

When I get to the screen asking me to choose a backup drive to restore from it will list my drive, but there is a Red Lock next to it. I cannot select the drive and go to the next screen. I haven't found any information about this problem. Can it be fixed?
