My computer hard drive started failing during a Rebit update. I replaced the hard drive and can get through all the Rebit recovery screens. I have picked the latest and earliest restore point and when I click restore, Rebit says it's complete in a second. I can browse the Rebit drive on another computer and my data seems intact but it will not restore. Any ideas?

I just bought a 3-license package of Rebit 5.
We have either XP machines or Windows 7 machines.
Will the same recovery disk work for both operating systems?
Or, do I have to make a separate recovery disk for each operating system?

"If you choose to restore to a drive larger than the original drive, keep in mind:
.All NTFS sections with a drive letter assigned are increased proportionally to the size they were on the original drive.[etc.]"
Should the word "sections" be "sectors"?
If, for example, I have a 320GB drive that uses 4K sectors, will recovering the Rebit backup of the 320GB drive drive to a 640GB drive result in 8K sectors on the new larger drive?

During full system recovery, after about 22% recovered, I get "ERROR! Full system recovery failed. A problem was encountered while trying to recover your data. Please contact Rebit technical support for assistance in solving this problem."

This happens:
- Whether I try to restore to the original SSD or a different, regular HDD
- Whether I boot the Rebit 5 recovery SW from USB stick or CD

The Rebit 5 backup on my USB HDD is pasword protected.

Now today I tried to make a full system recovery to an earlier date from my Rebit backup using the Rebit 5 Recovering CD

After finding the disk it asks for the pasword, but great is my supprise that the pasword is not accepted. I am 200% sure that I used the right pasword and tried it several times. With Caps on/of and NumLK on/of but to no avail...

As a workaround I went back starting up Windows 7 normally and then in the Rebit 5 Dashboard settings I deleted the pasword. So no pasword proctection is there anymore. And I could open the Rebit backup folders and scroll in them with no pasword needed.

Then again I shut down Win7 and started the Rebit5 Recovery CD.
But then again and again a pasword is asked even when there is no pasword protection!

So what is the problem here and what to do about it. Needless to say that a backup system is completely useless when access is denied even without pasword protection!

Thanks,

I have just about had it with Rebit5! I can go through all the menus to do a complete restore up to the point where it saids it is restoring files but the progress indicator stays at 0% and after about 3 or 4 minutes the program just stops running and the computer is frozen. I then have to do a hard reboot. Nothing appears to be removed from my drive and nothing is restored. I also checked the hard drives for any errors and it appears to be ok. I can view the backup and restore points with no problem. I really need to do a complete restore as Windows XP Pro has some serious issues and I don't want to start from scratch and lose a lot of my programs and data.

I am evaluating Rebit for my company for a large scale deployment.

Yesterday I used a brand new Dell computer for the trial, and managed to create the backup to a office NAS.

However, when I try to recover the backup to the new Dell machine, everything went well and I could see the percentage bar moving, till the last thing I saw is "ERROR! Full system recovery failed. A problem was encountered while trying to recover your data. Please contact Rebit technical support for assistance in solving this problem."

There is no clue at all what and why it failed, just threw such an error message onto me. What am I expected to do?

The Rebit full-system recovery process, also known as bare metal recovery or BMR, is intended to recover your computer from the Rebit backup to a replacement hard disk drive. For example, if the system hard disk drive were to fail, you would be able to purchase a replacement hard disk drive and insert it into the computer. After performing the full-system recovery, the system hard disk drive would contain the files and other information necessary for it to boot into Windows with your applications and data intact.

The basic steps for full-system recovery are

Power down the computer

Replace the system hard disk drive if necessary

Power up the computer

Eject the CD-ROM/DVD drive tray and insert the Rebit Recovery CD

Allow the computer to boot from the CD (it may be necessary to access the system settings, or BIOS, to boot from the CD)

Once the computer is started and a graphical screen appears, connect the Rebit drive

Follow the on-screen prompts to select various settings, including the day to which you want to recover the computer

Allow the process to transfer the appropriate data from the Rebit drive to the system hard disk drive

At the end, when prompted, click "Restart" to power cycle the computer

If the CD-ROM drive does not eject the CD automatically, press the eject button as the computer starts up

The computer should boot into Windows

I noticed signs of imminent failure on a hard drive on my wife's computer. I purchased the Rebit 5 software/disk combination and got a single backup before the laptop disk failed completely. HP sent a new drive (now installed), new OS (Win 7 64 bit) and original drivers. I would like to retrieve her files from the rebit drive (hopefully without having to restore OS). Can this be done? Do I have to make a restore drive?

I am evaluating Rebit 5 after much success with Rebit SaveMe preloaded on USB drives. The issue I have is that the restore CD doesn't work properly with a Dell Latitude E6410 using the built-in Intel HD Graphics for the QM57 chipset video adapter. The restore CD boots, but the screen changes to a blank (black) image after switching from 80x25 text mode. The screen doesn't turn off and the issue is the same if you connect an external VGA monitor. You can't see what is supposed to be on the screen, so a restore can't be performed.

This would be a disaster in the field where I rely on Rebit SaveMe to allow my sales team to recover their systems. I guess that is my fault for not testing Rebit restore on every new Latitude as I issued them over the years.

An older Dell E6400 using the Intel GM45 built-in video works fine. This appears to be an issue with the Linux framebuffer and intel drivers used in the rescue CD. We have this issue in our environment with Ubuntu 10.04, but it is fixed in Ubuntu 10.10. I have noticed that the Rebit 5 CD is based off Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, so this all seems very consistent.

Is there any way the Rescue CD ISO can be updated to reflect the driver changes in Ubuntu 10.10? I am willing to test anything you come up with, so please let me know.

This is a critical computer and I have to get it back. Help?

After buying a Rebit USB 2 TB drive, I installed rebit five, did a complete backup. Created two recovery points. Keep in mind the Dell that I was backing the data up from had a raid zero array striped. Two 250 GB hard drives. I removed the raid array and replaced the drives with a 500 GB SATA drive. I configured the bios and booted from the rebit recovery disk. The new hard drive was seen through Rebit as with the 2 TB Rebit USB drive, the backup data on the rebit drive was seen as one volume, and the new 500 GB hard drive was also shown. I assigned the drive Rebit to the new 500 GB drive. The Rebit software showed preparing the 500 GB hard drive so I walked away for a minute and not two minutes later I came back to the computer to see a completely black screen with the monitor light showing green as active. I gave it a little time and did some research in your forums, however I did not find any reference to this particular problem. At which point I hit the escape key several times and text came on the screen saying that it was shutting down. I am familiar with Linux OS and recognize this as the shutting down process. I attempted to boot from the rebit recovery disk but this time around the 2 TB USB drive was not seen in the rebit recovery process. This I tried several times with the same result.

At this point I thought it would be wise to put the drive back in the raid array and remove the 500 GB SATA drive. The main reason for the raid array zero replacement with one SATA drive was due to the fact that upon boot the raid manager detected errors on both drives yet I could still boot Windows XP. Computer booted Windows XP at which point I plugged the rebit drive in and the installed rebit software would not recognize the 2 TB USB Rebit drive. Though it was recognized by Windows I could not access it as a Windows error indicated there was errors or corruptions on the USB drive.

Questions:
1. Should I format the 2 TB USB drive to reclaim the drive? Would that format be NTFS?
2. I believe that when I hit the escape key during the blank screen issue, I may have inadvertently interrupted the recovery process and aborted the process. Perhaps if I had just let it go it may have worked?
3. Why did the screen go blank if it was still recovering? Has anyone encountered this error?

The drive being backed up has 20gb of data and the shared drive to be backed up to shows 80gb used and the backup is still running. So Should a seperate machine running XP SP3 with a shared drive configured be able to be used as a network backup drive? I have not been successful trying this.

Recovery Points were being created daily until 12/20. None since. I believe Rebit may have been interrupted while trying to create a Recovery Point once or twice in the 6 days since 12/20, but this is making me very nervous. Files are being backed up continually (Frog blinks), but if it weren't important that Recovery Points be created daily, you wouldn't have designed the software that way. I applaud your decision to enable the user to request that a Recovery Point be created ad hoc, but that version of the SW hasn't been released yet.

I also frequently see huge numbers of files being copied (e.g., > 80,000 right now, but these don't seem to be part of a Recovery Point. Why is this happening?

I recently purchased a SSD hard drive. I wanted to copy rebit backup to the new hard drive, but the capacity is smaller than the original hard drive and the external hard drive for rebit. About 30gb are used on the external HD. I purchased a 60gb SSD, but was unable to restore due to the new hard drive being (60gb SSD) a smaller hard drive. Can this be overcome? The SSD drives currently are to expensive to purchase a larger capacity than most internal and external hard drives. Can this be done?
Thank you

The Rebit software is set to capture a “Recovery Point” every 24 hours. If the Rebit is disconnected or the computer is powered off, the Recovery Point will be captured at the next available time that the computer is on and the Rebit is connected.

The initial installation successfully captures one of these points. So, the next Recovery Point would be captured around 2pm also. This Recovery Point processing utilizes the Microsoft Windows Volume Shadow Copy Service to create a static “view” of the disk and any open files in order to collect the relevant data necessary for full-system recovery.

In between these Recovery Point times, the Rebit software is in Continuous Data Protection mode. Files that are created or changed are copied to the Rebit. While you use the mouse and keyboard, the Rebit software remains idle. As soon as you stop using the mouse and keyboard for 15-30 seconds, the software copies files until it catches up or you move the mouse again.

It is possible to “force” a Recovery Point, but not terribly convenient. If you introduce a storage device, such as an NTFS formatted USB flash drive, you can add the item to the backup set. This addition forces the creation of a Recovery Point, and this becomes the new set point for the 24 hour clock.

Simply follow these steps to force a Recovery Point.

Connect a NTFS-formatted USB flash drive

Right-click the Rebit tray icon in the lower right corner (near the clock)

Select “More” -> “Select drives to back up”

Click to select the checkbox beside the drive

Click “Ok”

Trying to recover from corruption on drive, and ran full restore using rebit. Rebit reported restore successful but now Windows 7 is in infinite reboot with 2300+ crosslinked files / directories. I would like to retry the restore using a different time, but now rebit is saying the drive is write protected. How can i restore my computer now?

My drive has two partitions: C and D (HP Recovery partition)

During recovery, will Rebit automatically create those 2 partitions on a new drive, as backed up, or do I need to partition it first?

BTW: This is a VERY common scenario, and should be explained in the documentation.

I am trying to recover my system using rebit. I can boot to the cd and go through the process of rebuilding. But when I try to reboot, I get a blue screen error and windows reports it needs to repair. When I run the startup repair (Vista OS) it runs but eventually fails.

So in a nutshell, rebit is unable to recover my system. What am I doing wrong?

Hi,

I have had a rather disturbing experience with NetSmart.

Currently backing up 3 PC's to a NAS with NetSmart, each backup to a separate dedicated share. Rebit on all PC's has said in the past they are fully backed up, and all have at least 2 recovery points. So I thought I'm right - fully protected.

The boot drive on one of my PC's failed yesterday, so I downloaded the latest NetSmart Recovery ISO, burned the disk and booted from the Recovery CD to reinstall.

All booted into the Recovery environment fine. Unlike what is shown in the Help section for the Recovery software, no network shares at all are displayed, so I had to type in the share address. Not a problem.

When I did so, it said something along the lines of "... no backups found. Has Rebit said a full backup has been completed?" No help or other options.

I tried a few times, always the same. Couldn't find my backup to restore.

Log on name and password for share were correct.

So whilst in the Recovery environment I decided had better look at the backups for the other two PC's to see what it found there - make sure they were OK.

Exactly the same - no backups found.

I checked one of the other PC's - it still says fully backed up, with recovery points. And the files are all there in the NetSmart folder when checked from that PC. So, all there, but nothing found from the Recovery environment....

I checked the NAS shares - the amount of data in each of the backup folders is about correct.

So:
1 - I can't recover my boot disk, despite it being supposedly fully backed up
2 - Rebit had said all PC's were fully backed up, but I can't find recovery information for any of them
3 - I now have no confidence with Rebit NetSmart as a reliable backup for any of my PC's - will it work if I ever need it for any of them?

Rather concerning isn't it. Using the Recovery environment is something you don't usually do, and you expect it will work. My experience is not encouraging.

I have the downloaded version of rebit 3.0.1035.7079 but did not order the recovery CD since your help file indicated it could be created by the user (and I am a fairly experienced computer user). Specifically, the help document says to make the recovery CD by downloading the *.iso file from your support site (which I did) and then double click this .iso file to start the software that will allow you to burn the disc. But my machine does not recognize the .iso file type and hence no s/w starts when its double clicked. I have a CD R/W drive. What's your plan B? Seems like your help entry on this was written by someone who never actually followed the prescription or you are assuming some s/w exists which is in reality not standard.

Had to do full system recovery from backups made by Multi-PC version (3.0.259.7905) of Rebit. (About the 19 March 2010 time frame Rebit went from v3.0.259.6452 to v3.0.259.7905.) Attempted to use Recovery CD which I labeled version 3.0.0.5646 and dated 24 November 2009.(I had successfully used this CD before.) The CD would boot, etc., but I was not able to assign the drives for recovery: the left column was blank while the right column listed the newly installed replacement hard drive. Remembering that Rebit was updated in March I downloaded and burned the current Recovery CD ISO (SaveMe-Recovery-3.0.1033.7812) from rebit.com. I was then able to successfully do a full-system recovery.
