That is correct, Rebit will create a full backup of your entire system initially. It will then create subsequent recovery points capturing only the files that have been changed. Depending on what you do on your system and the size of the files being modified, Rebit can sometimes take much more than a few minutes to do its daily backup. I would suggest that you keep an eye on it, and if it is always taking such a long time to backup, you can always have it do the backups in the evening when you are not using your computer or once a week even.

I have installed Rebit and it took about 8 hours to do a complete backup to the attached external harddrive..

I did the same the following day and was surprised it took hours to carry out a complete backup a second time.

I was of the opinion that once Rebit had carried out a backup the first time, from then on it would be a matter of minutes to do a second backup.

I dont want to sit with an external harddrive connected to my laptop everytime I use it, for hours on end.

This kinda stuff is new to me so explain simply please and thanks for your time.

That is rather slow, but not unheard of. One thing to be aware of with slow backups is that if there are bad sectors on the disk being read or written to, the backup process can slow to a crawl. It is therefore recommended to run a check disk with the repair option selected on all hard drives.

On Ver 5.0.1035.11190, I'm seeing less than half that performance. Backing up 101GB the job is at 39.2% and has run for 14 hours already. That would make this backup take 36 hours, so it's running closer to 3 GB per hour.

For comparison, a Macrium backup of the same partition to the same backup drive takes about 40 minutes.

Please check to see if the Dell RD1000 appears in Disk Management. I have seen this occur on certain drives that come with preinstalled software on them--this software can serve to hide it from Rebit as a possible backup drive. The same thing can also be caused by manufacturer created partitions on the external drive, which may or may not be visible in Disk Management. You may have luck if you delete the volume and recreate it. If none of this helps, please contact support directly for additional support in this matter.

When you format a drive, all data is erased on the drive. This is irreversible in most cases (the exception being if it was formatted in Quick Format only and the drive is given to data specialists to recover data).

We do not support Replica software. Regarding the Rebit 5, we do have a 30 day trial freeware on our website that you can try. This way you can determine if it meets your expectations before committing to buy. In order to ensure that your drive is "seen" make sure that it is a Basic drive (not dynamic) and that it is formatted NTFS.

If the different drives are on the same physical drive, they cannot be separated. For example, if the C: and D: drives are partitions on the same hard drive, you cannot tell Rebit not to backup the D: drive. Both will be backed up in this case. However, if, like in nickc's case, the hard drive is a physically separate drive and Rebit is backing it up even though the user is telling Rebit not to through the interface, then please contact support directly. This is a bug that we are still investigating.

Same problem. I have C,D and E drives and I only wanted to backup C. However the software insists on starting with E despite my startup request.

One possible explanation is that I have an old Windows XP system on that drive.

On the E drive I have around 100GB of files and the first pass took 16hrs to do the initial backup. I cleaned off the software and disk and started again, but this time instead of using the USB port on the fron of the m/c I used the one on the back. This mistake of staring with the E drive was repeated but the time was about 15% shorter but still well in excess of the 10hrs expected.

This means the software is currently unfit for my use.

Mason, please contact support directly. When a system is stuck in the preparing to backup loop, then there is a problem with the computer you are trying to backup. Sometimes this is due to corrupt or broken Windows services. In any case, support will be able to determine the exact cause of this on your machine and help you overcome it.

I have to confess to being very disappointed with Rebit 5. It took around three days to back up about 250GB of data from a 500GB hardware RAID 1 array to a 1 TB USB drive. It then took forever to prepare to back up - I could leave it running overnight. Rebit support said that they did not support RAID drives (this despite their FAQs saying that they did, but there were issues restoring a RAID drive). So, I abandoned Rebit 5 and uninstalled it. Lo and behold, that broke Windows Backup, too. Its settings were gone, and it complained of a missing file when I tried to recreate them. This necessitated doing a system restore to before uninstalling Rebit, then MS Fixit to remove the broken installation (it thought uninstall was already in progress) and manually removing the Rebit files and Registry entries.

In short, whilst the Rebit concept is a good idea, on my system it was a disaster, and I won't be returning to it unless a new version appears. Had it not been a 'freebie' with some other software, I should have returned it for a refund. Hence I chose the 'disappointed' user name for this forum.

I also had the same problem - I contacted Rebit support and their suggestions were:

1) reinstall Rebit - which made no difference
2) Disconnect the (internal) hard drive I didn't want backing up when it ran the initial backup.

After the reinstall it looked like it had solved the problem but I had to wait 24 hours :( for it to complete the backup of the C: drive before it proceeded to start to backup the unselected drive.

Needless to say I didn't disconnect the second (internal) HD.

What is the size of your system hard drive? Ideally you want one at least 25% larger as the backup location. Keep in mind that additional drives do not share the backup data between them, but rather backup the entire system onto each drive. In other words, half of your data will not be on one drive and the other on the second. Each backup location will need to fit 100% of your data.

In many cases, a slow backup can be indicative of a failing drive, lack of system resources, or in Rhombus' case a non-NTFS format. FAT32 is backed up as a complete image and not file-by-file, hense it is not a good idea to backup large drives like your 1TB in this format.

Rondi, regarding the preparing to backup screen, that is when the Rebit is actually figuring out what has changed and backing that up. It is not backing up the entire system again, just the changes.
