If you have Rebit 5 you can remove a drive from backup. Rebit will then manually go through the entire drive and delete the Rebit backups. This process can take some time, but it is the only way to get rid of Rebit data without formatting.

To do this, open the Rebit 5 dashboard by right-clicking the frog icon in the tray and selecting open. Then, click on Settings (gear icon in the bottom right) and there select Backup Locations. There is an X button that can be used to remove the backup location. Another way to do it is to uninstall Rebit 5 from Control Panel selecting the option to Delete Backups.

Once the data is removed, you can then reinstall the software and have it re-backup the system. Note that when you uninstall, having your computer connected to the internet will ping the Rebit server and automatically give you another activation on your license key. This way you do not use up any activations during the process.

What if reformatting the hard drive is not an option. Well, what I mean is the hard drive is large, so I store a few things on there along with the backup. Is there a way to remove the current backup from the external hard drive, and then start the process over? I am convinced my Rebit backup is bloated with many documents I have long since deleted, and probably twenty Quicken data sets with different dates on them.

When you backup your system through Rebit, you can do so to a USB attached drive or to a NAS Box (Network Attached Storage) which is a Network Share. Try searching for 'NAS Box' in Google to see examples.

You cannot access the backup data by simply exploring the drive on the system that is being backed up. Instead, you need to right-click the frog icon in the tray and select Open. This will bring up the Rebit 5 dashboard. There, click on Browse Backups to view the backed up data.

If you want to see the data on a system that is not backing up to this drive (ie a system that does not have Rebit installed on it) you will need to double-click on Start.exe which will give you the option to Browse.

This is not an issue we can fix mccpry, because the majority of cases where Rebit cannot automatically delete a recovery point to create a new one are caused by a corrupt index on the external drive. These corruptions are most commonly caused by users not safely disconnecting the Rebit drive before unplugging it.

I have a drive that I want to backup to. It's a network drive in the sense that I access it via "My Network Places" in Windows XP and it's listed under "The Internet". I have a secure URL, username and password for it, but it doens't seem entering that info does any good in Rebit. Is it possible to backup to that location?

Hello
When I try all the methods suggested here I still can't find ANY backup files (although it says it is working).
When I access the drive manually here is what I see:
autorun.inf
start.exe

When I use windows explorer, it comes up blank.
Is it backing up (drive says 98gb is used)?
Can anyone help please?
thanks

If I understand correctly, you waited until Rebit made a restore point, and then you had Rebit create another restore point which took five and a half hours. Since this is abnormal behavior, it would behoove you to contact Rebit Support directly by email: support@rebit.com
We would need to see your gatherer logs, ideally one right after a backup and then another after the additional backup that takes 5 hours. This way we can compare the two and find out why it is taking such a long time.

Thank you.

Without knowing how much data has changed how can you, or I, calculate the data throughput?
I made this experiment:

I disconnected the computer from the Internet then:
1. I made a full Rebit backup (11.96 hours)
2. I made another full Rebit backup (5.46 hours)

From this I deduce that every time I make a backup there is a 5.5 hour overhead.
You say that when making a full abckup Rebit only copies data that has changed, so that's 5.5 hours to backup no data.
I do realise that Rebit has a lot of work to do to determine what data, if any, has changed and I assume this is what is going on, is this correct?
On my computer, Rebit is creating 104Gb of Completed Records and a syncSnapshot size of 1.1Gb for a hard drive that has 163Gb of data on it (presumably less what you call Windows backup files).

Am I missing something?

Thanks - update to above questions:

1. Yes, it resumed in 48 hours - strange that it said it would resume in 1 (!) day instead of 2.

2. Since Rebit knows that it is paused for 2 days, I really wish it would not ping the drive until then (why would it need to?). I would be very happy indeed for the Rebit tray icon to become orange until then. Can this please be considered?

When you pause it for 2 days it should stay paused and resume after 48 hours. If this is not the case then there may be a problem. Please keep us updated. The flashing light is the software pinging the drive to check its status; this is necessary for if the drive is physically disconnected the Rebit tray icon will become orange. I hope it is not too much of a nuisance for you.

I paused Rebit5 and set it to resume in 2 days.
When I look at the Status bar it says backups will resume in 1 day. I have 2 questions:

1. Will backup resume in 48 hours (and not before) when I set it for 2 days?

2. Why does the backup drive keep flashing once or twice a second? Task Manager shows the Rebit-5-Svc.exe consumes 1% or sometimes 2% of the CPU each time the drive flashes. I wonder what it can be doing since backup is paused.

Thanks, dan

Open the log file and search for "completed create recovery point".
The time for the operation is then given in seconds.
My C: drive has 149Gb used and it took 27793 seconds (8.22 hours), that's 18 Gb/hour (to a USB 3.0 drive).

The log files are not really intended for users, they are more for Rebit personnel if the need arises to troubleshoot your system. The backup speed varies depending on the system, but we estimate a rate of about 10GB/hr. It is usually best to start a backup in the evening and let it run overnight.

To Others interested in this thread:

I did a fresh install of Rebit, and found that when setting up a destination drive/partition, Rebit expects the destination partition to be approx 20-22% larger than Windows Explorer reported USED space on your source drive.

One more thought, this time on caps.

If Rebit is making the assumption that the source and destination partitions are approximately the same size, then leaving a buffering margin of 10% of the destination partition is sensible because it also approximates 10% of the source partition.

As a first order approximation in the case of a much larger destination drive, it would make sense to use 10% of the SOURCE partition's used space to make the decision to reorganize and pare the recovery points.

Re: my previous post.

I'm often using drive and partition interchangeably, except for the sentence

"Otherwise, perhaps Rebit can use its experience to advise users how to partition a drive for Rebit's use"

In this case, what I mean by drive is disk (the physical, unpartitioned piece of hardware), because partitioning is done in advance of using Rebit.
