If I understand correctly, you waited until Rebit made a restore point, and then you had Rebit create another restore point which took five and a half hours. Since this is abnormal behavior, it would behoove you to contact Rebit Support directly by email: support@rebit.com
We would need to see your gatherer logs, ideally one right after a backup and then another after the additional backup that takes 5 hours. This way we can compare the two and find out why it is taking such a long time.

Thank you.

Without knowing how much data has changed how can you, or I, calculate the data throughput?
I made this experiment:

I disconnected the computer from the Internet then:
1. I made a full Rebit backup (11.96 hours)
2. I made another full Rebit backup (5.46 hours)

From this I deduce that every time I make a backup there is a 5.5 hour overhead.
You say that when making a full abckup Rebit only copies data that has changed, so that's 5.5 hours to backup no data.
I do realise that Rebit has a lot of work to do to determine what data, if any, has changed and I assume this is what is going on, is this correct?
On my computer, Rebit is creating 104Gb of Completed Records and a syncSnapshot size of 1.1Gb for a hard drive that has 163Gb of data on it (presumably less what you call Windows backup files).

Am I missing something?

I believe your initial findings to be correct, as Rebit backs up everything that has changed on your system with the exception of Windows backup files (since that is redundant data).

I now believe the throughput figures I quoted above may be misleading because I don't suppose that Rebit5 backs up the whole of the VSS drive copy does it?
What exactly is backed up in a Recovery Point (or it may be easier to say what is not backed up)?
Thanks, dan

Your reply prompted me to do the work myself with the following results:
Open the log file and search for "completed create recovery point".
The time for the operation is then given in seconds.
My C: drive has 149Gb used and it took 27793 seconds (8.22 hours), that's 18 Gb/hour (to a USB 3.0 drive).
I do not leave equipment powered on over night.
I can't understand why you were reluctant to share this simple information with us, but this may be of interest to others.

The log files are not really intended for users, they are more for Rebit personnel if the need arises to troubleshoot your system. The backup speed varies depending on the system, but we estimate a rate of about 10GB/hr. It is usually best to start a backup in the evening and let it run overnight.

I have looked in the log files but failed to spot the start and end times.
Can you please tell me what to look for?
I will then know when to plug in my backup drive.

I have seen that some others have similar problems but I have not found a satisfying answer or solution in the forum. I am encountering multiple problems that might or might not be related.

- Rebit claims that my computer is fully backed up. When I looked in the backup in order to copy files to a different computer there were only outdated files and several directories missing. In one case there were only two of the main directories backed up, one the Desktop the other a fairly useless directory, nowhere any documents. In another case it was the documents folder and the desktop, but no settings and other important directories.

- Often when I try to browse the backups, I cannot see all three laptop backups that should be on the drive. Sometimes I see one, sometimes two, sometimes all three. Very strange.

- Even when all three backups are visible, in 9/10 cases I am unable to look into individual folders. Either Windows explorer (Win 7) crashes or I get an endless progress bar (40+ minutes) until I give up.

Rebit failed me now for the second time when I urgently needed to restore files and I wonder why I even bothered to upgrade to Rebit 5. Considering that in each case Rebit made me believe that all files had been backed up, I find the program highly unreliable and certainly far from 'ridiculously simple'.

To see how this program works or not on another computer I have just set it going on my netbook with an external hard drive to backup too. So far it's backing up as should do, but again I cannot see anything under the Rebit folder at the bottom of the left hand panel in explorer. Once again the megabytes are going down if I check the external drive and it says it backing up the recovery part of the drive and a special system drive as well as Windows drive (c:) (these 2 drives are hidden from Windows) If I check the drive with explorer and find the Rebit folder, I can see just various folders with just numbered folders inside (only make sence to Rebit as you have to use the Rebit logo on the bottom of the left screen to view the files properly). I beginning to think I can't trust this program as now on 2 computers I can't see the backups. Thank goodness my 2 Mac's don't have such problems.

This may seem off-topic, but a few things worry me, a lot:

There's no public change log.

Some important issues were handled by support directly, with the result not being visible in this forum, or maybe were not resolved at all. Like: can't browse my backup, "Documents and Settings" Backup Is Empty! and Unable to restore hard drive.

As one cannot browse the backup without using Rebit, one needs to be very confident that the backups are reliable...

Though I am on a Mac myself, I've recommended Rebit to others in the past. Not sure what to do...

Many thanks Arjan. None of the drives are hidden, just like c:. It seems funny that nothing is shown for d: & f:. I'll have to wait and see when the back up is done and see if it appears then. I've made sure it's using the n: drive to backup (I've checked using CMD command and checked with dir command and you can see the total number of bytes going down, if you update a few moments later again the bytes are getting lower as the backup progresses.

I can click on the Rebit and shows me all the files etc to do with c:, but nothing else is shown under the Rebit folder. If I right click on either the d: or f: explorer shows me the normal menu (no Rebit title at all) If I right click on the Rebit folder I just get the normal menu. Nothing shows up for d: or f:. All the drives are NTFS system, non of them hidden etc. Actually c: d: and f: drives are all one hard disc, My drive e: is a seperate drive, (I haven't backuped this drive yet as f: is still backing up at present.)

I have a dynamic ip connection to the internet through a cable service. I have had, and can get again, a static address through one of the free services. So, with a static ip address to my home modem, is there a way I can set up my daughter's Windows 7 laptop with my 3-license copy of Rebit (she would be the third user, after myself and my wife's PCs)? I have a 3 terabyte drive, partitioned into three 1-terabyte partitions, anticipating one for each of us, in a DLink NAS on my home network. I am delighted in how well Rebit functions for both of us, and want the umbrella extended to my daughter's PC, even though she's 30 minutes away from my home. Can Rebit be configured to backup to a static IP address?

So, 3) in fact does need one to use Rebit software, but of course that software has already been installed on computers that are being backed up.

Unlike for example Apple's Time Machine, one cannot browse the backup disk on another computer without the Rebit software. That is not necessarily bad though:

As one needs the Rebit software to read the backup disk, Rebit also allows one to protect the backup using a password. (It's not really encrypted, but without altering the Rebit software one cannot read the data.)

To read the backup on another computer, one can simply install the browse-only version of Rebit. See "Browsing Backups on a Computer without Rebit 5 Installed" on page 32 in the manual, which currently states:

Installing the Backup Browser

On the computer that does not have Rebit installed, plug in the USB backup drive containing the Rebit 5 backups.

It should have given you the option to uninstall it right in that window. This is automated. If not, you can go to Control Panel, Programs, and Uninstall Rebit there. After restarting the computer, you can run the Rebit 5 installer by clicking on the download link you were emailed.

I updated to Rebit5 from Rebit4. I hook up the backup drive, do all the right stuff then get a message that says the drive is dedicated to a different backup program. It says that to use the drive with Rebit5, I must uninstall the program that is residing in my backup drive. How do I do that?? Make it simple please, I am not computer savvy.

Hi Lydia, thank you for your interest. Here are the answers to your inquiries:

Yes, Rebit 5 can backup as many drives as you want; provided that there is enough capacity on the backup location.

Rebit creates recovery points every 24 hours, and the user has the option to create one at any time. You can then restore to any of these dates.

It is easy to restore just one file without the need for the Rebit CD. Just right-click the file on your computer and choose to Browse in Rebit. You will then see all of the different versions of that file by date.

No, you do not have to devote a drive solely to Rebit. Rebit 5 now installs on your computer and can backup your system to as many drives as you want. These drives behave like normal drives, and you can add data and remove data at will.

Several questions about Rebit 5:
1) Will latest Rebit enable backing up more than one drive (ie main hard drive and one external drive?)
2) Can one save a particular image or must one always restore from the latest version?
3) Can one easily access the backup to select just one file or must one use the Rebit software to do so?
4) Do you still have to have a backup drive devoted only for Rebit?
My questions are based on a recent web review that listed above as drawbacks of Rebit.(IE will backup only one drive, must devote one external drive only to Rebit, can't directly access rebit drive, etc.) I'm hoping latest version has corrected some of them. I read the FAQ and other product information on Rebit website but am not skilled enough to tell if my questions were answered...)

Registry files are backed up every time a complete system snapshot is captured. If your Rebit is constantly plugged in, then these files will be backed up every 24 hours. Also, depending on your OS, you might not even be able to see some of the registry files even though they are being backed up. For instance, on Windows 7 the user registry can be seen on the Rebit, but the system and security registry files are on a non-NTFS partition and hence cannot be seen.

How often does rebit backup registry files? The rebit status states that the system is backed up, but when I compare timestamps, the registry files (e.g. SOFTWARE) on the backup drive are older than the same files on the C drive. I would like to ensure that the registry files are backed up often.

Thank you,
