I forgot one problem:

- The backup for laptop #1 has directories in it that are only on laptop #2, and backup #2 has directories in it, that only exist on laptop #1 or #3.

I have seen that some others have similar problems but I have not found a satisfying answer or solution in the forum. I am encountering multiple problems that might or might not be related.

- Rebit claims that my computer is fully backed up. When I looked in the backup in order to copy files to a different computer there were only outdated files and several directories missing. In one case there were only two of the main directories backed up, one the Desktop the other a fairly useless directory, nowhere any documents. In another case it was the documents folder and the desktop, but no settings and other important directories.

- Often when I try to browse the backups, I cannot see all three laptop backups that should be on the drive. Sometimes I see one, sometimes two, sometimes all three. Very strange.

- Even when all three backups are visible, in 9/10 cases I am unable to look into individual folders. Either Windows explorer (Win 7) crashes or I get an endless progress bar (40+ minutes) until I give up.

Rebit failed me now for the second time when I urgently needed to restore files and I wonder why I even bothered to upgrade to Rebit 5. Considering that in each case Rebit made me believe that all files had been backed up, I find the program highly unreliable and certainly far from 'ridiculously simple'.

I have been in contact by email with the support for several days. The support team has been very responsive! Even if they did not succeed in solving my issue (seems to be some incompatibility with other software) I am really pleased with that level of support! I definitely will evaluate rebit again for my next system.

Explorer crashes happen for many different reasons. Although Rebit may exacerbate the issue in isolated cases most times there is an underlying issue. Please continue to work with support, and if we are not able to resolve the issue, we have a flexible refund policy.

KarlNapf, thanks for the pointer to oops!backup.

I'd stick with Rebit, but because of bugs which make my system unworkable and since I have no way of knowing if and when the bugs are fixed (the Rebit people decline to publish this information) it's pretty much a lost cause.

Installed rebit 5 two days ago. This morning initial backup has been complete. Wanted to try to access my backup..... explorer opens with an icon representing my computer. I double-click on that item - and explorer crases ("Explorer has detected a problem...." or whatever the exact message is - I only have it in german). Did reboot my computer - still same issue. Having a "write-only" backup is not really helpful.....

Another problem I noticed: my thunderbird mailer sometimes is not able to perform actions like moving mail to trash or to other folders because another process is accessing the data....

Everytime I try to uninstall it (in Control Panel / Programs and Features), I get the error message 'Setup/Uninstall has stopped working' - 'Close program'. And that's the end of it. I can't install the other version, I can't make a backup with the 8778 Rebit drive, I can't uninstall. What shall I do?

We can then use these files to determine what is causing the BSOD and the error.

When I left left click the Rebit desktop icon, which was placed there at installation, the computer freezes. It wants to send Microsoft an error message and it also wants to send a debugging message from Dr Watson. The icon is targeted to C:\Program Files\Rebit\bin\Open NSE.exe. What is the Namespace Extension application and why is is causing the computer to freeze? What is the purpose of the desktop icon since the tray icon seems to provide all the menu items needed?
My Rebit ver is 3.0.259.6452. The computer is running XP Pro. Currently the status is "Backed Up as of (today's date, 10 seconds ago).Everything else seems to work OK,including the tray icon with an OK right-click menu.

This type of repeated BSOD event typically indicates a problem with Volume Shadow Copy Service. Please try the following.

Click "Start" -> "Run..." (or press 'Windows' + 'r' keys together)

Type "cd \Program Files" and Enter (Note: for 64-bit Windows, type "cd \Program Files(x86) and Enter)

Type "cd Rebit\bin" and Enter

Type "rbvss C:" and Enter

If a BSOD event occurs, it may be necessary to rebuild the subscriber list for the VSS system. In this event, refer to "Solution 2" at this link.

The Rebit software should normally be able to remove older information to make room for new files. If the VSS system is compromised, however, this would help explain the inability to remove older data.

I get repeated computer reboots with BSOD. I've followed both suggestions for correcting the problem; running chkdisk on startup and uninstalling all of the Storage Volumes without success. In addition Rebit has the following message when I hover the mouse over the Rebit icon: Rebit has been suspended owing to lack of space. I thought Rebit would delete old copies of files to make space for new ones. I have a 2 terabyte hard drive with 661GB used. My external backup drive is a WD My Book with 2 terabytes.

In a small number of cases, a computer has restarted during the process of the initial backup. In these cases, it was determined that an area of the system hard disk drive had a bad sector and led to unpredictable results. During the course of the initial backup, Rebit is copying every file on the computer hard drive, even those that are not accessed otherwise. If the computer crash is related to a bad sector, corrective actions are needed.

To determine if the computer hard disk drive has any bad sectors, follow the steps below.

Click “Start” -> “Run…”

Type “eventvwr.exe” and Enter

(for Windows Vista only) Click the plus symbol beside “Windows Logs” to expand the list

Click to select “System” from the list on the left

Scroll through a few days worth of the events shown, looking for red circles (errors) with a “Source” of “disk”

Double-click any of these red circle (error) items to find more information

Look for the phrase “Bad block”

SOLUTION:

In order to allow the hard disk drive to repair itself, follow these steps.

Open a "My Computer" window

Right-click the "C:" drive icon and select "Properties"

Click to select the “Tools” tab

Click “Check Now…” in the “Error-checking” area

Ensure “Automatically fix file system errors” is checked

Click “Start”

Click “Close” and “Ok”

Restart the computer

After the error-checking process runs (allow for a half hour or more for this process to complete) the disk drive will likely be in a better condition. The Rebit backup should then be able to complete its work.

In a small number of cases just after Rebit installation, the computer started to back up the first time and led to a blue screen (a.k.a. Blue Screen of Death or BSOD) with error message BAD_POOL_HEADER. In another case, the screen simply went black and froze at that point. In yet another case, the computer restarted.

SOLUTION:

The problem is uncommon, and it is related to previous software leaving a Windows system (Volume Shadow Service) in an unstable state.

To repair this condition, perform the following steps.

Open Device Manager (click “Start” -> click “Run…” -> type “devmgmt.msc” and Enter)

Click the menu item “View” and select “Show hidden devices”

From the list below, find “Storage Volumes” and click the plus symbol to expand the item

For each Storage Volume item, right-click and select “Uninstall” (Click “OK”, then select “No” if asked to restart)

Restart the computer

Wait while Windows initializes each of the Storage Volumes.

Restart the computer once again

At this point, connecting the Rebit will work normally.
