Rebit has found that one of the components needed to perform the "Safely Disconnect" function is missing in some installations. If you are having this issue, please download this

file

and place it in your C:\Programs Files\Rebit\bin or the C:\Program Files (x86)\Rebit\bin if running 64 bit OS. Double click on the file in that directory to run it. For Vista and Windows 7, right click and select "Run as administrator".

The file will automatically repair your installation.

You need to treat the external drives like regular USb connected drives and use the Windows Safely Disconnect option. This is found in the tray located in the bottom right of your screen next to the time.

I've just upgraded to Rebit 5 and have noticed that the Safely Disconnect option no longer exists or at least I can't find it. How do I safely disconnect the Rebit 5 drive?

I would like to somehow do a disconnect and reconnect to SaveMe on a schedule. The reason I want to do this is I leave my computer run all night and I would like the hard drives to have a chance to sleep. As I do not use the computer overnight the contents of the hard drive should not change very much.

Thanks.

Yes, the external Rebit drives that are powered by the power adapter have an on/off switch or push-button, depending on which model was shipped. There have been multiple models in the past few years with different styles of power switches, and the diagrams in the documentation have not highlighted this.

You may remove power from the Rebit device using the power switch. After right-clicking on the small Rebit icon in the lower right corner (system tray), you should see a "Safe to remove" message that indicates no further data transfers will occur, and removing power is perfectly safe. At a future time, you may simply re-apply power by switching the power back on. There is no actual requirement to physically disconnect the USB plug. With the smaller form-factor Rebit enclosures, the only way to remove power is to disconnect the USB plug(s).

I'm a light home computer user and have happily backed up my hard drive using a single 500GB pc rebit device hooked to my HP Vista 32bit machine. As not much changes from day to day, and the drive is a bit noisy, we'd like to <safely disconnect>, then re-connect, say weekly, to catch up. Question: can disconnect be achieved by simply turning the unit of with the little black switch on the rear of the unit after <safely disconnecting> or must one literally pull out the USB connector? BTW..I agree with previous posters, there is no mention of the functioning of the on-off switch in any of the documentation, or the mechanics of <safely disconnecting>. For less intense users, this discussion would be really useful. Startup was as simple and as successful as advertised!
