If the device does not appear in the Disk Management interface and other troubleshooting steps have been pursued, including checking the cable connections and power switch, the device may be defective.

One more check may be performed by opening Device Manager (click "Start" -> "Run..." -> Type "devmgmt.msc" and Enter). Expand the list at the bottom for "Universal Serial Bus controllers" and connect the external disk device. The lack of appearance of a new "Mass Storage Device" entry typically indicates a problem with the external device.

I'm a light home computer user and have happily backed up my hard drive using a single 500GB pc rebit device hooked to my HP Vista 32bit machine. As not much changes from day to day, and the drive is a bit noisy, we'd like to <safely disconnect>, then re-connect, say weekly, to catch up. Question: can disconnect be achieved by simply turning the unit of with the little black switch on the rear of the unit after <safely disconnecting> or must one literally pull out the USB connector? BTW..I agree with previous posters, there is no mention of the functioning of the on-off switch in any of the documentation, or the mechanics of <safely disconnecting>. For less intense users, this discussion would be really useful. Startup was as simple and as successful as advertised!

I'm the same as Michael O'Neil -- drive is not detected and does not show up under Disk Management. If my computer doesn't detect the drive, then I don't even have a way to reset it.

I'm trying to connect it to a Dell D620 running Windows XP.

Should I just return it?

Given that the update to Windows 7 is complete, and that the Windows 7 installation may have altered the partition table of the system hard drive, we recommend uninstalling the Rebit software and resetting.

Will you please follow the steps found at this page to reset the Rebit? This will allow Rebit to back up the new configuration reliably.

well ok I was running vista 64 home premium when i connected a 1tb re bit. No problems. Then I did an in place upgrade to windows 7 home premium, 64 bit. Well the computer started to act buggy even though the upgrade advisor said there were no compatibility issues. So I did a so called custom install, did not reformat hard drive.

Computer's ok, but Re bit was not. Could not access it and wasn't working. The only thing on the Re bit was "autorun"

I did as the previous poster suggested:

"1.Identify the Rebit drive letter from the "My Computer" window (disconnect and reconnect the Rebit USB cable - if no item appears for the Rebit device, there may be a problem with the disk drive)
2.Click the "Start" button in the lower left corner of the screen
3.Find and click the "Run..." item
4.Type "F:\Rebit\sbin\RebitInstaller.exe" (replace "F:" with the drive letter found above)
5.Click "Ok""

I DID THE ABOVE AND WAITED. THERE WAS NO "OK" TO CLICK. BUT EVENTUALLY A REBIT WELCOME SCREEN APPEARED, CLICKED THERE AND THE SCREEN TO ENTER THE ACTIVATION KEY CAME UP. ENTERED THE KEY AND SOON ICONS APPEARED ON DESKTOP AND IN TASK MANAGER"

However what I got was
"this system is already backed up to another Re bit you may browse the files with this Rebit" and "Re bit disconnected"
i
So Re bit does not show up in windows explorer. It shows up on my computer as "other system folder" and I can browse my previously backed up files. It shows up in device manager as "Hitachi usb drive. In disk services it shows up as "new volume" and when I try to assign a drive letter I get "this system is backed up to another re bit.... I have icons but they do nothing. How can I get my Re bit working again? Thanks for all your help

I RECENTLY PURCHASED A REBIT 1TB DRIVE PACKAGE. MY SYSTEM HAS A NEW WINDOWS 7 INSTALLATION WITH WHICH I REPLACED WIN XP PRO.

IN THE PACKAGE WAS A PAMPHLET WITH A REGISTRATION/ACTIVATION KEY BUT NO INFORMATION AS TO WHAT IT WAS FOR OR HOW IT WOULD BE USED.

FOLLOWED INSTRUCTIONS AND CONNECTED THE DRIVE. that was it for instructions. BLUE LIGHT CAME ON AND STAYED ON. NO GREEN LIGHT ACTIVITY TO SPEAK OF.

NOTHING HAPPENED JUST THE STANDARD LITTLE win 7 WINDOW POPPED UP ON SCREEN TO INDICATE DRIVE WAS RECOGNIZED AND CHOICES TO LOOK AT FOLDERS OR BEGIN A WINDOWS BACKUP.

WAITED AND WAITED. NOTHING EVER POPPED UP TO INDICATE "CLICK OK".

LEFT IT ON ALL NIGHT WITH THE COMPUTER. CLICKED ON THE REBIT DRIVE IN THE "COMPUTER" IN THE MORNING AND THERE WAS NO INDICATION OF ACTIVITY. ONLY THING ON THE DRIVE WAS AN AUTORUN.INF FILE.

SO THEN I DISCONNECTED/RECONNECTED USB. THE WIN 7 DRIVE RECOGNIZED WINDOW POPPED UP AND THE SECOND OPTION SAID DO A WINDOWS BACK UP. MAYBE REBIT USES WINDOWS BACK UP, I THOUGHT. SO I CLICKED ON CUSTOM, MADE MY SELECTIONS AND CLICKED OK. WINDOWS STARTED BACKING UP TO THE REBIT DRIVE.. BUT THEN I HAD SECOND THOUGHTS. I CANCELLED THE BACK UP, WENT TO THE DRIVE; DELETED THE TWO FILES WINDOWS HAD CEATED AND THEN STARTED GOOGLING. FOUND THIS SUPPORT FORUM AND READ THIS:

"Note: only if the above sequence fails to start the Rebit software, do the following:

1.Identify the Rebit drive letter from the "My Computer" window (disconnect and reconnect the Rebit USB cable - if no item appears for the Rebit device, there may be a problem with the disk drive)

ENTERED THE KEY AND SOON ICONS APPEARED ON DESKTOP AND IN TASK MANAGER. A SCREEN ALSO CAME UP AND SAIDWORDS TO EFFECT: WELCOME. REBIT IS WORKING NOW AND WILL CONTINUE TO. AFTER THAT I SAW GREEN LIGHT ACTIVITY AND THINGS SEEM TO BE IN ORDER NOW. SOMETHING VERY CONFUSING TO A NON-GEEK COULD HAVE BEEN MADE VERY SIMPLE WITH A FEW LINES ON THE ACTIVATION KEY NOTICE.

SEEMS TO BE WORKING OK FOR NOW. WILL BE ATTEMPTING A RECOVERY TO A NEW HARD DRIVE I ORDERED, WHEN IT ARRIVES.

I cannot get this to operate. There does not appear to be a file called start.exe; only a readme file. No other files present. Is there somewhere to get them?

My Dell Windows Vista computer isn't recognizing Rebit. I read the FAQ, but the Rebit does not appear in the Disk Management window. When I plug or unplug the USB cable, Windows makes that dun dun notification sound, so on some level it's recognizing it.
I've rebooted the computer with the device plugged in and turned off, and rebotted with the device plugged in and turned on.
Where do I go from here? This was supposed to be easy!

Thank you for the suggestion. It may also make sense for Rebit to ship those devices with the power switch in the "On" position.

I recently purchased the Rebit 500 GB Desktop Backup. When I received it, I followed the simple 1, 2, 3 instruction that came with it but I did not get the go box and nothing happened. I then followed the instructions on-line in the FAQs and reconnected everything, but Rebit would not start up.

Upon closer inspection of the actual Rebit box itself, I noticed a small black button which is apparently the "on/off" switch for the Rebit 500 GB model. Once that was pushed in, everything worked and, yes, it was "ridiculously easy" to set up the back-up program. But it would have been much easier if somewhere in the simple instruction booklet you mentioned that this model had that on/off switch! Thanks for a great product.

First, check the connections.

Ensure the USB connections are good. If there are 3 USB plugs, ensure both USB plugs at the computer end are connected to a USB port directly on the computer.

Ensure there is a power LED illuminated on the external disk drive device. If there is a power switch on the device, ensure it is in the position toward the "1" symbol.

Next, many Windows computers are configured to automatically run software on USB devices. However, some are configured to prevent software from running. If nothing happens when Rebit is connected, it is likely due to this Autorun or Autoplay feature configured to prevent automatically launching software.

To manually start the Rebit software:

Open a "My Computer" window

Double-click the Rebit icon associated with one of the disk drive items

Double-click the file labeled "Start.exe"

Note: only if the above sequence fails to start the Rebit software, do the following:

Identify the Rebit drive letter from the "My Computer" window (disconnect and reconnect the Rebit USB cable - if no item appears for the Rebit device, there may be a problem with the disk drive)

Click the "Start" button in the lower left corner of the screen

Find and click the "Run..." item

Type "F:\Rebit\sbin\RebitInstaller.exe" (replace "F:" with the drive letter found above)

Click "Ok"

Only if the Rebit disk device does not appear in the "My Computer" window, please follow these steps

Right-click the "My Computer" icon and select "Manage" from the menu

On the left-hand side of the window that appears, select "Disk Management"

Look in the list of items for the Rebit disk drive with a "Volume" labeled as "REBIT" or "New Volume" (if needed, disconnect and reconnect the Rebit device to positively identify it)

If the Rebit device is visible but no drive letter is assigned, right-click the rectangle and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths..." (likewise, if the drive letter for the Rebit drive is the same as a "Network Drive" listed in "My Computer", you may change the drive letter from this same interface)

Click "Add..."

The default values are acceptable; click "Ok"

Verify that the REBIT drive now has a drive letter; close the “Computer Management” window

Double-click the Rebit disk drive icon to launch the Rebit software
