I use my laptop as if it were a desktop. It has a Vista 32 bit operating system. As a ,docking station, I use a ,7 port USB adapter. Can I simply unplug the 7 port adapter from my PC or must I first uninstall drive. Can I damage data or drive if I do not uninstall drive before disconnecting from my laptop.

When I plug in my backup drive will it automatically begin a new system backup up again?

Hi,

I had a system malfunction, so I downloaded the latest recovery boot CD image from Support, created the rebit boot CD and booted from it. When it gets to the part where it shows my external USB HD to restore from, I cannot select it. It has a red Lock icon next to it. I believe it is because I have set a rebit password for this backup archive. However, I am not prompted to enter the password to unlock it. Therefore, I cannot restore my backup data! Please advise!

Thanks!

I bought Rebit SaveMe to use the backup of my old desktop (XP) programs on my new Windows 7 laptop. However, that does not work. Has the backup failed or is it simply impossible to do this? I do not want to copy the first computer's programs, I just want to be able to use them.

I am running version 3.0.769.8778 under vista 64bit. This installation has been working without problems for several months, am now getting message that backup is suspended owing to lack of space. The backup device has 24 gig left. I was under the impression that as space became scarce older generations of file would be deleted to free up space. Was I dreaming? What needs to be done now?

I have the downloaded version of rebit 3.0.1035.7079 but did not order the recovery CD since your help file indicated it could be created by the user (and I am a fairly experienced computer user). Specifically, the help document says to make the recovery CD by downloading the *.iso file from your support site (which I did) and then double click this .iso file to start the software that will allow you to burn the disc. But my machine does not recognize the .iso file type and hence no s/w starts when its double clicked. I have a CD R/W drive. What's your plan B? Seems like your help entry on this was written by someone who never actually followed the prescription or you are assuming some s/w exists which is in reality not standard.

How to make a Rebit Recovery Flash Drive

Due to the fact that more and more computers do not have optical drives these days, it is sometimes necessary to use a flash drive to boot into Rebit's full system restoration function instead of a CD.

In order to do this, users must first download UNetbootin, a program that allows the creation of bootable USB drives:

UNetbootin-- Latest Windows Software

Additional information about UNetbootin can be found here

Once UNetbootin is downloaded, run it. You will see a Window that looks like this:

IMAGE 1

Click the bubble next to "Diskimage." Leave the default "ISO" option and download the following file:

Rebit Recovery ISO

Once it is downloaded, click on the [...] in the Diskimage field and find the file that you just downloaded. Once it is selected, click OK. You should now have UNetbootin look like this:

IMAGE 2

At the bottom of the UNetbootin window, select "USB Drive" under Type and then the select the correct drive letter in the Drive menu. It may be necessary to select "Show All Drives" if your flash drive does not appear.

Once you have everything selected, click OK.

Note:When the process completes it will ask if you want to reboot – select EXIT.

Now, open the flash drive in your Computer/My Computer window. You will see the following files:
IMAGE 3

Now make the following changes:

Rename menu.c32 to 1menu.c32

Rename syslinux.cfg to 1syslinux.cfg

Copy menu.c32 from the boot folder on the flash drive into the root of the USB drive

Copy USB:\boot\isolinux\isolinux.cfg into the root of the USB drive

In the root of the drive rename menu.c32 to vesamenu.c32

In the root of the drive rename isolilnug.cfg to syslinux.cfg

Done. Boot from the flash drive to verify.

I have a rebit that was used on an old XP computer.

I now have a new Windows 7 computer and I would like to start backing up this new computer.

I DO NOT need to bring any files over from rebit, I just need to start using it as if it were brand new on the new computer.

Do I simply reset rebit using the single license reset instructions or is there something else I need to do.

Again, I do NOT need any data off of Rebit, I just need it to start backing up the new computer, which is a 64 bit machine, Windows 7.

Thanks.

To determine if the Volume Shadow Service is configured on your Rebit SaveMe and SaveMe Express, follow these steps:

Click “Start” -> “All Programs” -> “Accessories”

Click “Command Prompt” (NOTE: For Windows Vista and Windows 7, right-click the item and select “Run as Administrator”)

Type

cd C:\Program Files\Rebit-SaveMe\bin\
if you have SaveMe and
cd C:\Program Files\Rebit-SaveMe-Express\bin\
if you have SaveMe Express and press Enter

NOTE: If you have 64 bit Windows, the above sequences should read
cd C:\Program Files (x86)\Rebit-SaveMe\bin\
and
cd C:\Program Files (x86)\Rebit-SaveMe-Express\bin\
respectively.

Type

rbvss.exe C:

and Enter

Allow the command to complete (30 seconds or more) – the last line should read “Snapshot creation done.”

The lack of “Snapshot creation done.” and the presence of an ERROR value indicates a problem with the Volume Shadow Service. The information below provides steps you may follow to configure the service.

Solution 1
To configure the Volume Shadow Copy Service in Windows, start by following these steps

Part 1 of the VSS configuration

Save the item to a convenient location such as the Desktop

Launch, or double-click, the vss-config1.bat fileNote: Windows 7 or Vista users: right-click the file and select "Run as administrator"

Click here to download Part 2 of the VSS configuration

Save the item to a convenient location such as the Desktop

Launch, or double-click, the vss-config2.bat file
Note for Windows 7 or Vista users: right-click the file and select "Run as administrator"

Click "Ok" in any windows that appear, ignoring any errors

Restart the computer

Click here to download Part 3 of the VSS configuration

Save the item to a convenient location such as the Desktop

Launch, or double-click, the vss-config3.bat file
Note: Windows 7 or Vista users: right-click the file and select "Run as administrator"

At this point, Rebit status display should progress from "Rebit is connected" to "Rebit is creating Recovery Point" to "Rebit is copying data". If this does not occur, further steps are necessary.

The Microsoft resource for Volume Shadow Copy Service may be found at the http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940184 web page from Microsoft. An excerpt is included below.

Solution 2
Basically, Windows includes a service called Volume Shadow, and this service is complex. It allows for a variety of applications to utilize the beneficial feature, but can become mis-configured as applications are uninstalled. It may have become mis-configured for unknown reasons.

The most common resolution to this problem is as follows:

Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.

Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\EventSystem\
{26c409cc-ae86-11d1-b616-00805fc79216}

Click to select the "Subscriptions" subkey

On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to delete the subkey.

Exit Registry Editor.

Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.

Right-click the following services one at a time. For each service, click Restart:
o	COM+ Event System
o	COM+ System Application
o	Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider
o	Volume Shadow Copy

Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.

At the command prompt, type vssadmin list writers, and then press ENTER.

If the VSS writers are now listed, close the Command Prompt window. You do not have to complete the remaining steps.
If the VSS writers are not listed, type the following commands at the command prompt. Press ENTER after each command.
o	cd /d %windir%\system32
o	net stop vss
o	net stop swprv
o	regsvr32 ole32.dll
o	regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
o	regsvr32 vss_ps.dll
o	regsvr32 /i swprv.dll
o	vssvc /register
o	regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll
o	regsvr32 es.dll
o	regsvr32 stdprov.dll
o	regsvr32 vssui.dll
o	regsvr32 msxml.dll
o	regsvr32 msxml3.dll
o	regsvr32 msxml4.dll
Note The last command may not run successfully.

At the command prompt, type vssadmin list writers, and then press ENTER.

Confirm that the VSS writers are now listed.

Solution 3
The next most common issue is related to the target directory for Volume Shadow becoming inaccessible. To check this condition, follow these steps:

Click "Start", click "Run...", type "regedit", and then click OK.

Locate and then click the following registry key:

The only recent change to my Win 7 (x64) system has been to install Rebit. Now I cannot access my optical drive.

Device Manager lists it and says it is operating correctly I can open the drive but it does not recognize any disk (Blu-Ray, DVD or CD) that I insert. Clicking on the icon in Explorer causes a popup message to "Insert a disk" even though one is already inserted.

The laptop's tech support has been of no help.

Would installing and running Rebit be a factor with this problem?

Had to do full system recovery from backups made by Multi-PC version (3.0.259.7905) of Rebit. (About the 19 March 2010 time frame Rebit went from v3.0.259.6452 to v3.0.259.7905.) Attempted to use Recovery CD which I labeled version 3.0.0.5646 and dated 24 November 2009.(I had successfully used this CD before.) The CD would boot, etc., but I was not able to assign the drives for recovery: the left column was blank while the right column listed the newly installed replacement hard drive. Remembering that Rebit was updated in March I downloaded and burned the current Recovery CD ISO (SaveMe-Recovery-3.0.1033.7812) from rebit.com. I was then able to successfully do a full-system recovery.

I recently purchased a 1 TB multi PC version of Rebit Save Me. The thing that seems odd is that they drive doesn't have an active light on it like my older 500 MG drive does. Is there anyone else with this drive that can tell me if they have a light on it for the drive being active?? I can hear the drive running constantly but no light ever appears.

I installed rebit software and it just finished backing up my internal drives. I have an OS drive, and two (2) data drives. Right now my rebit drive can hold all the data on the os and two drives but as my two data drives get full the rebit drive will not be able to back-up everything. My plan was to stop backing up of one of the data drives when this happens.

My problem is that when i select the "more" option and "select drives to back-up" is that one of my data drives is grayed out and says "(insufficient space)". All the drives are checked marked, but the OS drive, and one of the data drives are grayed out, not letting me de-select them.

When i go to my rebit drive, all the drives are backed-up. How come i cannot de-select the data drive that is grayed out.

Great product! However, in the era of the Terabyte, lack of Firewire and eSATA support is disappointing. Especially eSATA. Are there any plans to support either of them, do you have even a remote idea of the timing...and if we have already purchased your product (which I have), do we get a free upgrade?

To determine if the Volume Shadow Service is configured on your Rebit Single-PC and Multi-PC, follow these steps:

Click “Start” -> “All Programs” -> “Accessories”

Click “Command Prompt” (NOTE: For Windows Vista and Windows 7, right-click the item and select “Run as Administrator”)

Type

cd C:\Program Files\Rebit\bin\
and press Enter

NOTE: If you have 64 bit Windows, the above sequences should read
cd C:\Program Files (x86)\Rebit\bin\

Type

rbvss.exe C:

{26c409cc-ae86-11d1-b616-00805fc79216}

Click to select the "Subscriptions" subkey

On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to delete the subkey.

Exit Registry Editor.

Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.

Right-click the following services one at a time. For each service, click Restart:
o	COM+ Event System
o	COM+ System Application
o	Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider
o	Volume Shadow Copy

Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.

At the command prompt, type vssadmin list writers, and then press ENTER.

If the VSS writers are now listed, close the Command Prompt window. You do not have to complete the remaining steps.
If the VSS writers are not listed, type the following commands at the command prompt. Press ENTER after each command.
o	cd /d %windir%\system32
o	net stop vss
o	net stop swprv
o	regsvr32 ole32.dll
o	regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
o	regsvr32 vss_ps.dll
o	regsvr32 /i swprv.dll
o	vssvc /register
o	regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll
o	regsvr32 es.dll
o	regsvr32 stdprov.dll
o	regsvr32 vssui.dll
o	regsvr32 msxml.dll
o	regsvr32 msxml3.dll
o	regsvr32 msxml4.dll
Note The last command may not run successfully.

At the command prompt, type vssadmin list writers, and then press ENTER.

Confirm that the VSS writers are now listed.

Solution 3
The next most common issue is related to the target directory for Volume Shadow becoming inaccessible. To check this condition, follow these steps:

Click "Start", click "Run...", type "regedit", and then click OK.

Locate and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\
ContentIndex\Catalogs\System

Confirm the value in the right-hand side for "Location" is "C:\System Volume Information" - double-click the item if needed to change the location

If no value exists for "Location", right-click in the right-hand pane and select "New"->"String value". Enter "Location" as the name and press Enter. Double-click the item, type "C:\System Volume Information" and click "Ok"

Exit Registry Editor

Restart the computer

An uncommon issue is related to Microsoft Visio. Follow these steps to correct this potential conflict.

Click "Start", click "Run...", type "regedit", and then click OK.

Locate and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ContentIndex\Catalogs\Visio

Click "Edit" -> "Delete", then confirm the deletion

Exit Registry Editor.

Restart the computer

Solution 4
And finally, there may be information in the Windows Event Viewer that will provide steps to resolution.

Click "Start" -> "Run."

Type "eventvwr.exe" and Enter

(for Windows Vista only) Click the plus symbol beside "Windows Logs" to expand the list

When I do a backup to use on a different computer must I install the old system files (like Windows, Office, etc) before I install the backup info on Rebit or will rebit install everything from my old system?

If I get a virus do I have to format the hard drive and then install all the system disks before rebit? Or will rebit install everything back like it was?

I restored a file that I accidentally had deleted. It would only restore as I read only file, which meant I could not use it in the spreadsheet it had previously been used in, i.e. could not save it or add any data. Is there a way to recover a file as not read only.

Rebit stopped working properly and I tried to fix it with the help of the forum but was not successful.
I proceeded with this:
1. disconnect external hard drive
2. uninstall rebit using add/remove programs
3. restart laptop
4. connect hard drive
5. format external hard drive (tried both quick format and full format)
6. installed rebit version 3.0.258.7905
7. I did not have to enter the product key anywhere

Rebit status: Rebit is Disconnected. This does not change when hard drive is disconnected and connected.

1. started "manage" on "My Computer"
2. clicked on services
3. try to start "Rebit System Monitor"
4. Error message: Could not start the Rebit System Monitor Service on local computer. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified.

Any idea what to do next.

( I also tried all the Volume Shadow Service fixes but that did not help)

The Rebit tray icon is an important part of Rebit's functionality. It helps notify users of their backup status as well as offer many useful options and data.

Hence, if upon starting up your computer you find your Rebit tray icon missing, try the following steps to get it back:

Open Task Manager and select the Processes tab. Select to show processes for all users. Sorting by Image Name is very helpful. Do you see a RebitTray.exe or Rebit-SaveMe-Tray.exe? End this process and any duplicates that you might have.

Rebit will automatically restart the process and you should see it appear in your tray once more.

If there is no RebitTray.exe or Rebit-SaveMe-Tray.exe process in your Task Manager, then:

For Rebit SaveMe and SaveMe Express
Go to C:\Program Files\Rebit-SaveMe\bin and double click on Rebit-SaveMe-Tray.exe

For Rebit Single-PC and Multi-PC
Go to C:\Program Files\Rebit\bin and double click on RebitTray.exe

This should get your icon back in the tray. If this does not work, then it is possible there is something wrong with your Rebit installation. Contact out Technical Support team and inform them that you have tried these steps without any success.

I have an existing iomega data hard drive. I'd like to use Rebit to back up my computer (still using the Iomega box). I need to move the existing data off the imogea drive to somewhere else on my computer so the Rebit disc can install. Every time I try to do this, there is not enough space on my computer to move it elsewhere, so I can't complete the install of Rebit. What do I do?

Thanks
