There is a condition found on a small number of computers where the Rebit and Rebit SaveMe product installs and leads to a display that flashes "Creating Recovery Point" repeatedly. The mouse focus is stolen from the user and is a nuisance, requiring the disconnection of the external hard disk drive.
To correct this condition, it is necessary to modify a registry key.
- Right-click this link and select "Save link as..." to download the registry key modifier
- Either "Save As" the name "PartMgrKey.reg" or locate the file after download and right-click the file icon, select "Rename", and modify the name to read "PartMgrKey.reg". Click "Yes" to confirm that you want to change the extension of the file. Note: if the web browser displays the text contents of the file, press 'Ctrl' + 'S' keys to save the file as the name "PartMgrKey.reg"
- Double-click the file "PartMgrKey.reg" to apply the change to the registry (click "Yes" if prompted to confirm the change)
- Restart the computer
At this point, the Rebit software should display "Creating Recovery Point" for no more than 2 minutes, followed by a countdown of files remaining to be copied.
Optionally, you may follow the steps below to manually modify the registry entry:
- Click "Start" -> "Run..."
- Type "regedit" and Enter
- Open the key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}"
- If "UpperFilters" not already present in the area to the right, right-click in the white area and select "New" -> "Multi-String Value"
- Modify the value (double-click the item or press Enter) to read "PartMgr" -> Click "Ok"
- Restart the computer
- Open Disk Management (click "Start" -> "Run..." -> Type "diskmgmt.msc" and Enter)
- Confirm that drive letters are associated with the items in the window
Rebit will then be able to initialize a Volume Shadow assuming the VSS system is in good running order. If Rebit is unable to create Recovery Points (see this link, it will be necessary to follow the steps at this link.
