Displaying Icon in tray on Windows 7

FYI -- if you are using Windows 7, the icon will not automatically be added to the "tray" in the right corner of the task bar. You will have to click the up arrow, select "Customize," and then choose "Show icon and notifications" in order for the icon to appear.
It's not the same as an icon pinned to the task bar.

Thank you. Windows 7 does display icons differently than previous versions of Windows.

Help please. I plugged the unit into an USB extension on my pc and left it for over a week. No icon anywhere. Light was on but apparently nobody was home although it clicked continuously. Have now plugged it in to the front of my pc. This is a desktop. Light is on. Some clicking like it is trying to work. No icon anywhere to be found including in the customize option for icons. I am running windows 7. Is this unit defective or do I need to do something that I am not doing?

    Thanks,
    Margaret

Any idea how windows 7 displays icons? I cannot find anything on this pc that indicates rebit back-up is attached let alone that it is working or how to make it work.

First, check to see that the computer recognizes the drive. To do this, right-click Computer and select Manage. There, under Storage you can select Disk Management. Do you see your external drive in the list?

If you do not see it, then the drive might be defective.
