The Rebit full-system recovery process, also known as bare metal recovery or BMR, is intended to recover your computer from the Rebit backup to a replacement hard disk drive. For example, if the system hard disk drive were to fail, you would be able to purchase a replacement hard disk drive and insert it into the computer. After performing the full-system recovery, the system hard disk drive would contain the files and other information necessary for it to boot into Windows with your applications and data intact.

The basic steps for full-system recovery are

    1. Power down the computer
    2. Replace the system hard disk drive if necessary
    3. Power up the computer
    4. Eject the CD-ROM/DVD drive tray and insert the Rebit Recovery CD
    5. Allow the computer to boot from the CD (it may be necessary to access the system settings, or BIOS, to boot from the CD)
    6. Once the computer is started and a graphical screen appears, connect the Rebit drive
    7. Follow the on-screen prompts to select various settings, including the day to which you want to recover the computer
    8. Allow the process to transfer the appropriate data from the Rebit drive to the system hard disk drive
    9. At the end, when prompted, click "Restart" to power cycle the computer
    10. If the CD-ROM drive does not eject the CD automatically, press the eject button as the computer starts up
    11. The computer should boot into Windows

Hi. For one of my customers, recovering a particular, very old, application, and the data for that application, is critical. Do I understand correctly that this application / data would be restored and completely usable, but only in the situation where a new drive is inserted into the machine that created the Rebit backup?

    Thanks...

The recovery process will work for both a newly inserted hard drive as well as for the existing hard drive. This assumes the existing hard drive is in good condition.

When I get to the screen asking me to choose a backup drive to restore from it will list my drive, but there is a Red Lock next to it. I cannot select the drive and go to the next screen. I haven't found any information about this problem. Can it be fixed?

The lock indicates that the drive was not properly dismounted from a Windows system.

To correct this, take the drive to a Windows system right click on the drive, and select "Properties". On the "Tools" tab, select "Check now...". Click on "Start" and wait for the process to complete. It can take minutes or hours depending on the severity of the issue. Now turn off the Windows computer and disconnect the drive. You may have to repeat this process if the Rebit disk is failing.
