Is Rebit Multi-PC sneaker-ware backup?

  1. A review I read indicated that in order to back up multiple PCs with the Rebit Multi-PC product, we need to move the storage device from PC to PC when a backup is desired. Is this correct?

This is accurate. The Rebit Multi-PC product needs to physically connect to the computer to perform backup operations. Therefore, protecting multiple computers does require physically disconnecting from one computer and then to the next. Sufficient time is required to copy all the new or changed files, usually just a few minutes.

The computer that Rebit is connected to will remain backed up in a continuous fashion. Upon connection to a computer that has not been backed up for some time, Rebit will back up only those files that have been created or modified.

  3. Hmm, in our experience, home users and small business users simply won't perform such a task, despite the fact that they know the consequences. If it's not automatic, it simply won't get done. This is disappointing news.

Rebit is a great idea for one PC, but it really needs to adopt an agent model for multiple PCs. With Gigabit Ethernet common at home and in small offices, there should be no reason a Rebit agent on the "client" PCs couldn't send the backup to the "server" PC for storage.

Certainly there would be a limit to this, but it shouldn't be an issue on smaller networks. On larger networks, a dedicated "server" PC would be worth the cost.

No matter how good your single-PC technology is, if people don't use it in a multi-PC network environment, it's wasted. I really do hope you consider such a feature in a future release. It would make selecting Rebit for small network backup a no-brainer.

    I totally agree with this.

At home, I have a 4 TB raid server for all my backed up DVD's and music and image files. But I dont have a good network backup for my everchanging documents and general installed programs.

If rebit could backup to a network drive instead of to a USB drive, it would be the ideal way to backup the sensitive data on my homecomputers. Even if i had to create 1 network drive (partition) for each pc, wich is easily managed.

Also if you create a raid 1 it adds another level of data safety because this way you also elminate the data loss when the disk crashes on wich the recovery files are found. (I have encountered this before with a lightining strike accident).

I truly hope you guys enable this software to back up to a network drive, i would then Buy it in an instance.

I second the feature request. Especially on laptops you simply wont connect a USB drive all the time while they are always online in the wireless LAN where often a backup NAS is located that could easily do backups continuously. Slow speed won't matter if changes are incremental, only the first time the backup will be slow, then updates will be quick if done say on an hourly basis.

+1 for this request. In fact, I'm about to pull the trigger on something else unless ReBit can let me know if this is in the pipeline.

Rebit is planning to introduce a product that utilizes a NAS device as backup storage for a multitude of computers. Timeframes and feature sets are still being finalized, and we will be providing more details in the near future.

When you get that, then maybe you really will be Time Machine for Windows.
