Re-installation

    Hi,

I have a new (couple of months) 2TB drive with Rebit - worked like a charm. OS is Windows 7.

After a time, the system was slow to respond and once in awhile it was necessary to re-start the drive, i.e., on/off.

Now have messages - 8-days since back-up & I can't get it to work - BUT...the light on the drive is blinking it's little heart out.

The software was uninstalled and the drive plugged back in - no-good. No icon and trying to force an install isn't working (lots of data on the drive might pose an issue?).

Tried my other computer - the plan is to get the version numbers to confirm the possibility to do a reset. No good - no installation - BUT - like my main system - the drive light is also blinking it's heart out as if it's backing up.

As I don't know the version #, but the dive is new - am I safe in resetting the drive as outlined on this site? Or, is there an appoach to jump-start the unit - it will take a long time for the new back-up?

    Kind regards,
    DBN

    Hello DBN,

You should not power off the drive while it's attached and running. This can (and probably did) cause the file table to be corrupted on the 2TB drive. What is likely slowing your system is Windows trying to repair the damage to the file system and, also causing the light to flash rapidly on the drive.

You are safe to follow the reset instructions. They include reformatting 2TB drive and that will fix the file table.

The initial backup will take the same amount of time (roughly) that it first did when you installed the software.
    Thanks for posting.

    Hi,

Thanks for the advice. It might be worth noting that the "Safely Disconnect" has not worked on any system - it only reports that it cannot be stopped right now, even after a backup is finished.

Back to the case at-hand - In attempting to reset the drive I found that I can't get access to the drive. On two Windows 7 systems, after an extended period of time, it times out - no access.

Using a Windows XP system – access to the dive is now available and while the system reported it was formatting - it wasn't. Interestingly, after several hours, the system was re-booted and the drive was fully accessible. I was able to install the program and back-up the XP drive. As a "Safely Disconnect" didn't work, a warm-boot was done to remove the drive.

The dive was then put on my main Windows 7 system – the drive shows up as “Local Disk (K:)” Clicking on the drive to get access, the system reports, after about a minute scanning, it “K:\ is not accessible the parameter is incorrect.

There seems to be an issue between an XP versus a Win 7 system – advice is welcomed.

    Kind regards,
    DBN

I would recommend running chkdsk on the external drive. See if that gets the issue resolved. If it doesn't, then your best bet would be to contact Rebit Technical Support at support@rebit.com and getting further assistance since this is not a common issue. My guess is there is something going on with either the drive itself, or there are some setting on your computer that need to be changed.
