The newbie in me just bought a Fantom GF2000EU G-Force External Hard Drive which will be dedicated to file back-up only. As I am reviewing rebit5 as a possible backup software, I wonder if I need first to install a Windows7 operating system on the new hard drive before rebit5 can be installed on the new drive.

You will need a system with Windows XP, Vista or 7 installed in order to use Rebit. Is the Fantom drive going to be your system drive or the backup location drive?

Then, I must install Windows XP on my Fantom external drive so to have it ready to accept rebit5. No problem...
Fantom is my D:/ drive. It's only role will be that of backup drive. My C:/ will remain my main system drive.
Thanks for your help.

I think you guys are a bit at cross-purposes.
PR0042, as I understand it you have bought the Fantom External, removable USB drive to use to store backups of your main system on.
If that is correct then You *cannot* install windows on the Fantom drive (or any other removable drive - the Windows installer won't let you). Nor is it necessary.
Your main system drive (C:) contains the Windows operating system and you install Rebit5 to that drive (C:). You then configure Rebit5 to create the backup files on your Fantom drive (D: in your case)

I was hoping to have an external drive setup somewhat similarly to Rebit preloaded portable drive...
My reasoning behind all this is my desire to save all my personal files and favorite programs before upgrading my main system from Windows XP to Windows7 Pro

I have installed rebit5 30-day trial. Easy to setup and is now up and running as dnaman said it would.
Thanks

As I have not come across informations to the contrary. Should I conclude that rebit5 is Windows7 ready ?

If you look on the Rebit main page under <Products> <Rebit5> <Tech Specs> it says it's for:
"32-bit Windows© XP and XP Pro (Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3), 32-bit or 64-bit Windows Vista® (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, and Ultimate), and 32-bit or 64-bit Windows® 7 (All Editions)"
