If the Rebit status continues to display "Rebit is disconnected", the first step is to confirm the USB connections.

    1. Disconnect the USB cable from the Rebit end
    2. Connect both USB plugs directly to the computer (this does not apply to the Rebit devices that connect to a wall socket for power)
    3. Connect the USB cable to the Rebit device

Next, please check that Windows recognizes the device.

    1. Click "Start" in the lower left corner of the screen
    2. Right-click "My Computer" to expose a menu and select "Manage"
    3. In the window that appears, double-click the "Software and Services" item
    4. Double-click "Services"
    5. Scroll down to find the "Rebit System Monitor Service" or "RebitSysMonSvc" - double-click the item
    6. Click "Stop" and "Ok"
    7. Double-click the "Rebit Service" or "RebitSvc" item
    8. Click "Stop" and "Ok"
    9. Along the left-hand side of the window, click "Disk Managmement"
    10. Disconnect the USB cable for the Rebit device
    11. (Optional) For the desktop Rebit devices, turn the power off for 10 seconds and then power the device back on
    12. Connect the USB cable for the Rebit device directly to the computer USB port
    13. Note whether the Rebit disk drive appears in the Computer Management window
    14. Right-click the Rebit disk drive item and select "Properties"
    15. Along the top of the window that appears, click the "Tools" tab
    16. In the area labeled "Error-checking", click the "Check Now" button
    17. If necessary, click to enable the "Automatically fix..." checkbox
    18. Click "Start"
    19. Along the left-hand side of the window, click "Services"
    20. Scroll down to find the "Rebit System Monitor Service" or "RebitSysMonSvc" - double-click the item
    21. Click "Start" and "Ok"
    22. Double-click the "Rebit Service" or "RebitSvc" item
    23. Click "Start" and "Ok"

It may also be appropriate to check for any problems with the disk drive.

To determine if the Rebit device or the computer hard disk drive have any problems, follow the steps below.

    1. Click “Start” -> “Run…”
    2. Type “eventvwr.exe” and Enter
    3. (for Windows Vista only) Click the plus symbol beside “Windows Logs” to expand the list
    4. Click to select “System” from the list on the left
    5. Scroll through a few days worth of the events shown, looking for red circles (errors) with a “Source” of “disk”
    6. Double-click any of these red circle (error) items to find more information
    7. Look for the phrase “Bad block”
    8. Similarly, look for red circles (errors) with a “Source” of “ntfs” - Errors associated with $Mft can be an indicator of a corrupt filesystem, and may need an error check (chkdsk) to repair the filesystem
