Windows 7 activation problems

    All,
So I purchased the Rebit SaveMe software for both my office PC and my home PC. Both are running Windows 7. Office install went fine, downloaded the software and ordered the CD. Backups working fine, then get prompted several weeks later for the license key. Enter the key from the back of the CD they sent and everything is great.

I was so happy with the product that I bought another copy for my home PC. Followed the exact same sequence there too. Downloaded the software, installed it and started backing up to my internal J drive. A couple weeks later it prompts me for the activation key, so I enter the key from the second CD that I received at home. Everything seemed fine, but then I got the "software is disabled" notice and the backups stopped.

The forum here has said that I should right click in the system tray on the Rebit icon, then go to "More" and choose "Activate Product". The problem is that on my "More" menu, there is no longer a license activation link.

There is another forum topic describing how to run a binary executable to do the activation. The problem, with doing that is that it was designed for Windows XP, and the program isn't where the forum article states on the Windows 7 install. I couldn't find it anywhere. I wrote an e-mail to tech support last Thursday, now 5 days ago, but haven't heard back from them.

I'm considering just uninstalling the software, then re-downloading it and installing it from scratch. Presumably then it would ask me for my license key at some point and I would be fine. It's just that it would have to re-initialize my backup drive, which is fine. I don't want to do this though if there is an easy way to get the software to accept my license key now. Any help would be appreciated.

The "no user effort" required is one of the reasons that I purchased the software and that aspect of it is great. But the inability to recover from the problem that I am having is a bit disconcerting.

I uninstalled Rebit from the Control Panel. As part of doing this I wiped my backup drive clean. That took about 10 minutes. I then rebooted the computer. I then formatted the backup drive and named it Rebit. I then reran the Rebit Saveme program that I originally downloaded. This then recognized the new backup drive and started working.

The last step was to enter the license key. SInce I did the re-install, the option to enter the license key was now available and I entered my key. The key was accepted and everything is working fine.

I am having the same problem. I purchased the 1TB external drive version. I'm running Win7, 64 bit. Did you just copy the Rebit folder to a CD then run the CD after the uninstall?

I received some help and hints from Rebit tech support. Here’s basically what I did to fix the problem.
    1. Go to the command prompt. Change to the directory below using this command:
    cd c:\Program Files\Rebit-SaveMe\bin
    2. In the \bin directory, check for the presence of a .dll file named “License-7447.dll” by typing “dir /as” to show all the hidden and system files. In my case my antivirus program identified that file as a Trojan Horse and deleted it. If you see the file, check to see that your antivirus program has not quarantined the file.

I had to build an “exclusion rule” in my antivirus software so that it does not scan the Rebit-SaveMe\bin directory for malware.

Next, since the .dll file had been deleted, I uninstalled Rebit ( there is an option to save the data on the drive) entirely; then reinstalled the Rebit Saveme software I had originally downloaded. The” License-7447.dll” file was reinstalled.

    3. After you have accomplished the above, from the Rebit-SaveMe\bin directory type the command “activation /f /m” (Activation.exe is a hidden system file). This should bring up the activation dialog box where you can enter your activation key, or it may just say that you are already activated.

Lastly, I started my antivirus software and everything is operating fine.

I’m using Kapernsky Antivirus 2010. Your antivirus program may treat that file somewhat differently, but antivirus software seems to be the culprit.
