XP PC 'hangs' following Rebit / Replica install

    HI
I'm running a reasonably modern Dell desktop PC with XP Pro (SP3) and 2 Gb ram.
Since installing Replica, there's times duringthe day when the system simply 'hangs' for up to ten seconds and doesn't respond to mouse / keyboard input. After the time is up it then actions all the mouseclicks etc that it's been storing up - which is kind of annoying.

    Amazingly - Seagate support said

"Since the drive works and has passed the Seatools tests, then it is probably the Rebit software occasionally trying to access the drive. This uses a bit of the system memory each time and will cause occasional hangs.

The best thing to do would be to unplug the drive from the system when you are doing any sort of hardware intensive work, i.e. watching a movie, playing games, working with several windows opened at once. Then, when you are done, you can plug the drive back in for the backups.

So this is an automatic backup system that you have to _manually_ unplug while you're working, and then remember to plug back in so it can do the backing up for you...??

Surely this can't be right. If I was that organised then I wouldn't need the Rebit software -I'd remember to manually run an incremental backup every night....

Tell me there's more to it than this facile solution!

Rebit makes use of a Windows feature named Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) which may help explain the delay you have described.

The VSS system is initialized at the time the Rebit software begins creating a "Recovery Point". The Recovery Point is a collection of files and other information necessary for full-system recovery and includes operating system files, registry files, etc. These files are typically open files and can only be accessed reliably with the VSS system.

The next time you experience a delay, you may check to confirm this in the "Event Viewer"

    1. Click "Start" -> "Run..."
    2. Type "eventvwr.exe" and click "Ok"
    3. On Windows Vista or Windows 7, click to expand "Windows Logs" from the list on the left side
    4. Click to select "System" from the list on the left side
    5. Click to select the most recent item(s) in the list of events with a "Source" of "Service Control Manager"
    6. An event with a description such as "The Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider service entered the running state" will confirm this service was initialized and likely used noticeable resources
    7. The presence of any Error items in the same timeframe should also be evaluated. Errors that indicate a disk drive problem could also explain system slowness and should be addressed if present.

The Rebit Recovery Points are created every 24 hours so long as the computer is powered on and the Rebit external disk device is available. If more than 24 hours elapses, Rebit will utilize the next opportunity to create a Recovery Point. If the timeframe is inconvenient, you may shift the timeframe to a latter part of the day by disconnecting the Rebit disk device until later. Upon connecting the device, the VSS system will be initialized and the Recovery Point processing will resume.
